Adapted from Heinrich Böll’s acclaimed novel, the film offers a fierce critique of Catholicism. Hans Schnier (Helmut Griem), a clown who secretly functions as a social commentator, survived a harsh Bonn childhood under World II and a mother consumed by Nazi zeal. He is shocked to find many friends and family entangled in the Catholic Church.
