What Happens in Mayday: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Mayday (2026) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Set in the year 1987, the story begins with the high-stakes actions of US Navy Lieutenant Troy "Assassin" Kelly, played by Ryan Reynolds, who demonstrates his skill and bravery by rescuing his wingman who is unable to land on an aircraft carrier. Following this successful landing, Kelly is recruited for a highly sensitive and covert reconnaissance mission over Russian territory. He is tasked with flying the advanced SR-71 Blackbird alongside US Air Force pilot Major Sanders. However, the mission takes a tragic turn when they are intercepted by a MiG fighter jet, resulting in the death of Major Sanders. In a desperate and bold maneuver, Troy forces a collision with the MiG before ejecting from his aircraft.

Upon landing in hostile territory, Troy is discovered and rescued by Nikolai "Nick" Ustinov, portrayed by Kenneth Branagh. Nick is a former KGB officer who possesses a deep fascination with American culture. Haunted by his past service in the KGB, Nick harbors a strong desire to help Troy and dreams of one day living in the United States. Although Troy initially attempts to flee on his own, Nick saves him once more, shielding him from the relentless search efforts led by the KGB and the formidable Alexander Volkov.

A tentative alliance is formed when Troy agrees to help Nick secure asylum in the US in exchange for Nick's help in escaping Russia. Their journey is fraught with danger; while traveling by train, they are spotted by the Russian military, forcing them to leap from the moving vehicle to evade capture. They find temporary refuge in a dacha, from where they contact the US Embassy in Moscow to arrange a meeting. However, their communications are intercepted, and Volkov becomes aware of their plans.

Once they reach Moscow, Troy and Nick visit Nick's estranged daughter, Anna, played by Maria Bakalova. Their reunion is cut short when Volkov's agents launch a violent attack on her apartment, forcing the group to flee to a safe house owned by Anna. During this time, Anna reveals a personal secret to Troy: she is a lesbian, a fact that is illegal in Russia and the primary reason for her estrangement from her father. Nick admits that he was already aware of this, and it was one of the motivating factors behind his decision to leave the KGB. With Troy's encouragement, Nick and Anna finally reconcile. Before parting, Anna leaves her father a photograph of herself with her girlfriend and a poignant message asking him to call her once he arrives safely in America.

The following morning, a devastating blow occurs when Troy contacts the embassy, only to learn that they will not provide asylum for Nick. While Troy still intends to meet at the embassy, Nick overhears this news and feels deeply betrayed. In a moment of desperation, Nick hands Troy over to Volkov. During a brutal interrogation, Volkov attempts to coerce them into signing false confessions. To break Troy's spirit, Volkov presents a memo proving that the US Navy knowingly exposed shipyard workers to carcinogenic asbestos—a tragedy that directly affected Troy's father. Despite the emotional pressure, Troy refuses to sign.

In a sudden turn of events, Nick pretends to cooperate but uses a pen to stab Volkov, allowing him and Troy to break free. In their daring escape, the duo manages to steal a mobile nuclear launcher. As they flee, Troy reveals the true story behind his call sign, "Assassin," leading to a genuine reconciliation between the two men. They make their way to the airport and hijack a Type ATR 42 aircraft. As they take off, Volkov boards the plane in a final attempt to stop them, but Troy manages to kill him by throwing him from the aircraft.

Realizing they cannot reach friendly territory in Finland, Troy uses his leverage to negotiate full immunity for Nick, allowing them to land safely on the USS Carl Vinson. In the aftermath of these events, Troy takes a principled stand by testifying before Congress regarding the Naval memo and the asbestos cover-up, which results in him being placed on indefinite leave from the Navy. The story concludes on a hopeful note, with Troy and Nick sharing a meal at McDonalds and planning a road trip across the United States in Nick's RV.

Q4

What does the asbestos memo reveal about the US Navy?

During Troy's interrogation in Mayday, Volkov presents him with a memo proving that the US Navy knowingly exposed its shipyard workers to carcinogenic asbestos despite knowing the health risks. The revelation plants the seed for Troy's later decision to testify before Congress, where he trades his career for the truth.

  • asbestos memo
  • navy cover-up
  • troy's father

Why did Nick leave the KGB?

Nick's decision to leave the KGB was driven by deep moral discomfort with the organization's brutality and by his estrangement from his daughter Anna, who is a lesbian in a country where homosexuality is criminalized. Anna is estranged from Nick because she is a lesbian, and same-sex relationships are illegal in 1987 Soviet Russia. Her father served in the KGB, the very institution enforcing those laws, creating an unbearable conflict between her identity and his career. The political reality of the Soviet system made it impossible for her to live openly, and the association with a KGB officer made her life even more dangerous, forcing a wedge between father and daughter.

Q10

Why can't the US Embassy grant Nick asylum?

The US Embassy in Moscow refuses to grant Nick asylum, though the film does not spell out the specific diplomatic reasoning. • embassy refuses asylum

  • kgb officer asylum
Q11

Why does Troy testify before Congress about the asbestos memo?

Troy chooses to testify before Congress about the Navy's asbestos cover-up because the memo Volkov showed him proved that the institution knowingly sacrificed shipyard workers' lives, including his own father's. The testimony results in Troy being placed on indefinite leave, a price he willingly pays for exposing the injustice.

Q12

What is the deal Troy makes with Nick at the start?

After Nick rescues Troy from KGB search parties in Soviet territory, the two men form a transactional alliance: Troy will help Nick obtain asylum in the United States, and in exchange, Nick will guide Troy safely out of Russia. The deal is born of pure necessity, since neither man can escape alone, with Troy stranded behind enemy lines and Nick trapped in a country he no longer wants to serve. The arrangement also gives Nick the chance to finally pursue the American life he has long admired through pop culture.

  • troy nick deal
  • asylum agreement
  • escape russia partnership
Q13

How does Troy survive after the SR-71 is hit by a MiG?

When a MiG fighter intercepts the SR-71 Blackbird over Soviet airspace and kills Major Sanders, Troy makes the desperate decision to ram the enemy aircraft rather than allow classified American technology to fall into Russian hands. He ejects from his own plane at the last possible moment, landing in hostile Soviet territory where he is eventually discovered by Nick. The crash leaves Troy stranded with no aircraft, no backup, and deep inside enemy territory, setting the entire escape plot in motion.

  • sr-71 blackbird
  • mig interception
  • major sanders killed

Q14

The decision caps his arc in Mayday from a rule-following pilot into a man willing to break with his own side for justice.

Why these movies?

The story pattern: A protagonist lands in hostile territory with the odds stacked against them. The plot moves quickly from one set-piece to the next: a failed mission, a desperate rescue, a chase through unfamiliar ground, and a climactic hijacking or last-minute save. Intercut with the action are quieter beats that reveal what is really being chased, which is usually family, forgiveness, or a second chance. The tone stays tense throughout but rises toward warmth, ending on reconciliation and moral clarity.

Why they belong together: These films are grouped because they balance intensity with optimism and keep the pedal down on pacing. They share a specific tonal mix: high-intensity thriller mechanics wrapped around a hopeful, slightly comedic, emotionally generous core. They tend to feature clear antagonists, linear chase-and-escape structures, and happy endings that cost something, and they reward viewers who want action that thrills without leaving them hollow.
