Based on Gerhart Hauptmann’s play *Before Sunset*, the film follows tycoon Mathias Clausen (Emil Jannings) after his wife’s death. He falls for his secretary Inken (Marianne Hoppe) and retreats to Italy, prompting his adult children to sue to have him declared incompetent, a furious reaction that leaves the audience questioning his sanity. Directed by Veit Harlan.
