In 2009, Adrian Helmsley, an American geologist, travels to India to consult with astrophysicist Dr. Satnam Tsurutani about a dire situation. He discovers that massive solar flares are causing a rapid increase in Earth’s core temperature. At a gathering in Washington, D.C., Adrian shares his alarming findings with the White House Chief of Staff, Carl Anheuser, who promptly arranges for him to meet the President.
By 2010, U.S. President Thomas Wilson and a coalition of global leaders initiate a covert plan aimed at preserving humanity’s existence. This ambitious project involves constructing colossal “arks” in Cho Ming, Tibet, where over 400,000 people are selected to board. As part of the effort, a Buddhist monk named Nima is evacuated while his brother Tenzin takes part in the ark construction. Funding for this endeavor is supplemented by selling tickets at a staggering price of EUR 1 billion per person. Fast forward to 2011, and valuable artifacts are meticulously relocated to the arks under the guidance of Dr. Laura Wilson, the President’s daughter, portrayed by Thandiwe Newton.
In 2012, we meet Jackson Curtis, a science fiction writer and limousine driver for Russian tycoon Yuri Karpov. Jackson, played by John Cusack, is estranged from his wife Kate, who now lives with her boyfriend, Gordon Silberman. While taking their children, Noah and Lilly, on a camping trip to Yellowstone, they confront a military blockade. Defying the restriction, Jackson’s family is apprehended but is later released after a recognition from Adrian, who recalls Jackson’s book, Farewell Atlantis.
After an unnerving night, Jackson locks in on Charlie Frost, a radio show host, who predicts impending doom based on ancient calendars and geological theories. When a catastrophic earthquake strikes Los Angeles, Jackson’s determination to save his family intensifies. He rents a plane to whisk them away just before the dramatic displacement of California into the ocean.
As seismic disasters wreak havoc globally, the family makes their way to Yellowstone to retrieve critical information from Charlie, who tragically perishes in the impending eruption. With news that the arks are located in China, Jackson’s group navigates through Las Vegas to find a larger aircraft. In a tense political scenario, Anheuser seizes control of Air Force One, while President Wilson remains in Washington for a final announcement. The ensuing chaos results in President Wilson’s demise when a colossal tsunami devastates the White House.
Upon arriving in China, their aircraft suffers a fuel crisis and crashes, tragically claiming the life of their pilot, Sasha. The group struggles to reunite as Yuri and his sons, possessing tickets, gain entry to the arks, abandoning Jackson and his family. They are ultimately rescued by Nima and carried to the arks, cleverly stowing away. As panic ensues and waters rise from the mega tsunami, the vital mechanisms of Ark 4 are sabotaged. In a harrowing turn of events, Jackson and his son, Noah, bravely resolve the issue, allowing their ark to escape a catastrophic collision with Mount Everest.
As they journey through the turbulent seas, Jackson reconnects with his family, and hope begins to blossom amidst despair. Their voyage leads them to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, where new landforms emerge from the retreating aquas. A new chapter unfolds as Helmsley finds companionship with Laura, while Jackson and Kate restore the bonds of their relationship, showcasing resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.
