The ending of The Vourdalak is both tragic and bittersweet. After recognizing Gorcha as the vampire who had terrorized his family and caused so much horror, Jacques makes a brave attempt to stop him. Despite the supernatural danger, Jacques manages to drive a stake through Gorcha’s heart, killing the vampire and ending the threat. However, this victory comes at a great cost. Jacques, wounded and exhausted from his ordeal, reaches out to Sdenka, who is also attempting to escape her cursed fate. Sdenka, feeling trapped and hopeless, is about to jump off a cliff to end her suffering. Jacques, determined to save her and give her a chance at life, rushes to stop her. Tragically, in doing so, he persuades her to reconsider her suicide, but they both end up jumping together. Their deaths symbolize the ultimate sacrifice and the destructive power of the curse that haunted the family. With Jacques’s sacrifice, Sdenka is left alive but forever changed by the horrors she endured. The film concludes on a note of both despair and a faint hope for redemption, emphasizing the tragic cycle of blood and the impossibility of escaping the darkness once cursed.
