Daughters of Darkness

Stefan Chilton, the son of an aristocratic British family who was raised in the United States, travels with his new wife, Valerie Chilton, through Europe. They check into a grand hotel on the Ostend seafront in Belgium, intending to catch the cross-channel ferry to England, where Stefan’s mother lives. Valerie senses Stefan’s reluctance to phone his mother, who does not know they are married. Because it is winter, the hotel is quiet, with few guests wandering the lobby at dusk. A sense of isolation hangs over the corridors as the couple settles into their honeymoon suite, hoping for a discreet escape across the sea.

At nightfall, a mysterious Hungarian countess, Countess Elizabeth Báthory, arrives in a Bristol driven by her “secretary,” Ilona Harczy. Elizabeth requests the royal suite, but the hotel’s middle-aged concierge, Pierre, informs her that it is occupied by the newlyweds. He notes having seen the countess at the hotel years earlier and remarks that she has not aged. Elizabeth moves to the adjoining suite and fixates on the young couple, her presence exuding a chilling calm that unsettles the staff and guests alike.

In their suite, Valerie reads a local newspaper article about a string of child murders in Bruges, each victim’s throat slashed. The next day, while visiting Bruges, the couple stumbles upon a freshly discovered crime scene, and Valerie feels a growing unease as Stefan’s fascination with the lurid details intensifies. Back at the hotel, Elizabeth and Ilona introduce themselves to Stefan and Valerie in the lobby. A police officer appears and mentions having known Elizabeth years before, though she remains evasive. Elizabeth explains that she is a descendant of Erzsébet Báthory and recounts the violent acts associated with that lineage, particularly the murder and mutilation of young girls. Valerie is repulsed, while Stefan seems strangely aroused by the sordid history. He finally phones his mother, who turns out to be a middle-aged, effeminate man. The “Mother” scolds Stefan for marrying without his mother’s approval, yet expresses a curious interest in meeting Valerie.

Night turns violent as Stefan lashes out at Valerie, culminating in a brutal, sadistic rape. The following day, Ilona seduces Stefan as Valerie tries to leave Ostend. Elizabeth intervenes, and the two women spend the evening discussing Valerie and Stefan’s relationship. Elizabeth warns Valerie that Stefan will treat her as inferior, and meanwhile Stefan toys with Ilona in the bathroom, attempting to pull her into the shower. A scuffle ends tragically when Ilona slips, slashes her hand on a razor, and dies after collapsing onto it. Valerie and Elizabeth return and discover the scene; Elizabeth orders Valerie to clean up the blood while Stefan sits in a state of shock. The three drive into the countryside to dispose of Ilona’s body.

After burying Ilona on the beach, they return to the hotel at dawn. Valerie, under Elizabeth’s spell, refuses to leave Stefan. A violent fight erupts, and Stefan’s wrists are slashed by a broken bowl, leaving him to bleed out. Elizabeth and Valerie drink the blood pouring from his wounds, a ritual that seems to sustain them. Just before dawn, they wrap his corpse in plastic and throw it over a guardrail onto a street below. Elizabeth gives his body one final kiss before they place it in Elizabeth’s car to flee town. The women speed away, Valerie driving toward the border into France, while Elizabeth insists they avoid daylight. Blinded by the rising sun on a dense forest road, Valerie loses control of the car. Elizabeth is thrown from the vehicle and impaled on a broken branch, her body then set aflame by the car’s explosion.

Months later, Valerie approaches a young couple at a resort, her voice now taking on Elizabeth’s cadence, hinting that the predator’s dark legacy lives on and that the cycle of predation continues with a fresh quarry.
