In the sweltering heat of 1978 Hong Kong, a violent confrontation takes a deadly turn as Wong Chi-hang brutally assaults Keung, a gambler who declines to lend him money. Amidst the chaos, Wong destroys his identification documents, crafting a new existence for himself as he disappears without a trace.
Fast-forward to 1986 Macau, where a shocking find disrupts a peaceful beach day. A family unexpectedly stumbles upon a bag containing dismembered limbs, which are promptly taken away by the police, overseen by the diligent Inspector Lee. Among the victims are Bull, Robert, King Kong, and Bo, all of whom become embroiled in the unfolding mystery.
Meanwhile, hidden in plain sight, Wong is now working at the Eight Immortals Restaurant, where the arrival of a letter meant for the restaurant’s mysterious owner, Cheng Lam, sets off alarm bells within him. In his desperation, he tears the letter, revealing his growing obsession with seizing control of the restaurant while a web of secrets festers around him.
The situation escalates when forensic analysis links one of the dismembered arms to Chan Lai Chun, Cheng Lam’s mother-in-law. Deepening the enigma, a strange letter from Cheng Lam’s older brother hints at a troubling disappearance. Wong’s behavior grows increasingly unstable as he tries to mask his guilt.
When a waiter catches Wong cheating at Mahjong, their confrontation erupts into violence. In a horrific act, Wong brutally kills the waiter, dismembers him, and callously transforms the remains into pork buns before discarding them in a dumpster.
Inspector Lee, sensing something amiss at the restaurant, investigates. Wong attempts to weave a deceitful narrative about having purchased the establishment from Cheng Lam. Yet, Pearl, a fellow employee, reveals that the restaurant has recently received troubling correspondences from mainland China, further fueling Wong’s paranoia.
That night, Wong’s sinister impulses culminate in the brutalization of Pearl, a harrowing assault that ends with her dismemberment, following a calculated, ruthless pattern. As the police zero in on Wong, he is placed under constant surveillance, the tension mounting as the truth edges closer to the surface.
In a gripping twist, as Inspector Lee meticulously uncovers the layers of the case, he realizes Wong’s innocence is a mere illusion. Robert and Bo catch Wong in the act as he attempts to eliminate potential evidence against him by crossing the border into China, only to apprehend him instead.
The intricate narrative unfolds as Lee deduces that Wong orchestrated the brutal murders of Cheng Lam and his family before watching in grim satisfaction as his restaurant was consumed by flames. Despite his vehement denials, Wong is subjected to torture by Inspector Lee and his team, who seek to extract a confession from him through both physical and psychological means.
Wong’s futile attempts to resist lead him to falsely claim police brutality, only to find himself incarcerated. His new roommate, Cheng Poon, Cheng Lam’s younger brother, becomes his tormentor, inflicting relentless brutality that leaves Wong in a perilous state.
Desperation drives Wong to attempt suicide by slashing his wrist, prompting a rescue from the authorities. In a shocking revelation, two Hong Kong detectives inform Inspector Lee that Wong is actually Chan Chi Leung, a notorious figure with a violent past, offering to extradite him. However, Lee decides to keep him in custody.
In a dauntless escape attempt, Wong overpowers a nurse and seeks freedom but is chased down and re-captured by the vigilant Bull. What follows is a harrowing journey where Wong is subjected to endless torment at the hands of Inspector Lee, who administers drug injections and relentless beatings that ultimately break Wong’s spirit, compelling him to confess.
As the story reaches its chilling conclusion, Wong, once a promising cook in Cheng Lam’s restaurant, finds himself sinking deeper into the abyss after losing a rigged game of Mahjong. A desperate hostage situation unfolds, leading to a spree of violence where Wong claims the lives of Cheng Lam’s family members in a heart-stopping, tragic climax.
Ultimately, the darkness surrounding Wong culminates in a haunting demise by suicide, leaving behind a legacy of terror and unresolvable questions that will linger long after he fades into obscurity.
