However, their idyllic excursion hits a snag when Ben’s car breaks down, compelling Sam to acquire a charming restored 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe convertible. As they cruise along the open road, both men find themselves lost in a wave of nostalgia, revisiting cherished memories, playing games of pool, sharing hearty laughter, and enjoying spontaneous fishing trips.

As the summer unfolds, Ben starts unraveling the mystery behind Muriel’s vanishing act. He learns that she initially set off on a solo getaway, which was abruptly interrupted by troubling blackouts—symptoms that would later hint at a grave health condition. With the weight of a dire diagnosis hanging over them, indicating that she has only months left to live, both Sam and Muriel must face the harsh truths about their mortality and reignite a love they thought was lost.

Ultimately, Muriel’s essence endures throughout the summer. Ben witnesses a happiness in his parents that he had never experienced before. After Muriel’s departure, Sam moves in with Ben and his family, cherishing their time together until his own fate draws near.

Years later, Ben and Rachel rejoice with the arrival of their son, Martin Samuel Kleinman, named to honor his beloved grandparents. The grave marker, adorned with the touching Hebrew phrase “מה שלי שלך ומה שלך שלי” (“What is mine is yours and what is yours is mine”), symbolizes the infinite love and generosity that characterized Ben’s parents’ union—a profound connection that surpasses the confines of life and death.
