Berlin in 1989 is a time of change, especially after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Two friends, Veit (Joseph Mücke) and Tom (Matthias Schweighöfer), dream of adventure and decide to embark on a trip to San Francisco. While Veit initially cites the stunning Golden Gate Bridge as his main interest, it soon becomes evident that there is a much deeper yearning driving his desire to travel westward.

Upon saving a modest amount of money, the duo finds their funds still a bit short, prompting them to alter their destination to New York City instead. Armed with just $55, a few items of clothing, and a collection of self-made films, they arrive in the bustling city. As they settle into their new environment, Tom discovers Veit’s true emotional motive: a heartfelt quest to reunite with his father, who fled the GDR twelve years earlier. A lone birthday postcard each year is the only connection Veit has left, and he hopes that by camping out at the San Francisco post office on his birthday, he will finally see his father in person.

Since finances are tight, they decide to hitchhike across the country. Their first ride comes courtesy of a comic book graphic artist named Daryll (Paul Rudd), who chauffeurs them in his old AMC Pacer. Daryll introduces them to a bar where they can showcase their films in hopes of making some extra cash. This encounter leads them to meet two young girls who invite the duo to their home. However, their excitement turns to panic when the parents unexpectedly return, forcing them to flee to the great outdoors for the night.

The next day, they are treated to a complimentary breakfast at a local diner. Veit’s kindness shines through when he returns a forgotten wallet to a biker in the diner, leading to an unexpected twist. Soon, they find themselves being whisked away by a gang of bikers on their journey westward. However, things take a violent turn when a confrontation arises between Veit and an intoxicated biker, resulting in Tom sustaining an injury as he tries to separate the two.

In a stroke of luck, a biker named Hope lends the duo his brother’s car, albeit without a trunk key. Their initial concern about the potential for illegal goods quickly morphs into surprise when they discover the trunk full of Star Wars collectibles during a police stop.

During their travels in Silver City, New Mexico, they meet Zoey, who has German roots and speaks the language thanks to her mother. They spend a couple of nights with her and even screen a documentary focused on the GDR at the local cinema, which catches the attention of the Mayor. To cover essential car repairs, the boys engage in selling painted concrete pieces as authentic Berlin Wall remnants, painting a picture of their desperate but determined pursuit toward San Francisco.

As their journey continues, they take an exciting detour to Las Vegas, where they push their boundaries further. Veit and Tom venture into a gay club dressed in Russian army attire, stripping down to earn funds for Tom’s dental expenses. Conflicts arise when Veit’s feelings for Zoey become complicated, leading to tension as they find themselves at odds over their affections.

Ultimately, the two friends reclaim their camaraderie at the San Francisco post office, where they encounter a twist of fate. While Veit steps away momentarily to grab some pizza, Tom mistakenly approaches a stranger he believes to be Veit’s father. After an awkward exchange, it is disclosed that Veit’s father perished while trying to escape, and the stranger had been tasked with sending misleading letters to protect the family from the painful truth.

With the weight of the revelation crushing him, Veit storms off into the city. Tom trails behind to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, where they reunite in a moment of shared understanding and backup. The adventure concludes with them delivering the borrowed car to Hope’s brother, a testament to their journey filled with unexpected twists, deep-seated emotions, and the unbreakable bond of friendship.
