The River Wild

Gail and Tom, a couple from Boston, are facing significant marital issues that have strained their relationship. In an effort to reconnect and revive their bond, Gail proposes a rafting trip in Idaho with their son Roarke.

The family sets out for their adventurous rafting trip along the Salmon River in Idaho, bringing along their beloved dog for company. At the last moment, Tom decides to join Gail and Roarke, marking a hopeful start to their journey.

While on the river, the family encounters two fellow rafters, Wade and Terry, who initially present themselves as friendly companions. They share stories and enjoy each other's company, adding a sense of camaraderie to the trip.

That evening, the family sets up camp and celebrates Roarke's birthday, which includes playful interactions and flirtation between Gail and Wade. Despite the seemingly festive atmosphere, tensions begin to subtly rise.

As the night progresses, Gail starts to feel uneasy around Wade after noticing a change in his demeanor. She becomes increasingly aware that it might be wise for the family to keep their distance from Wade and Terry.

The following morning, Wade unexpectedly reveals to Roarke that he and Terry are armed, exposing the family to imminent danger. This shocking revelation prompts Gail and Tom to devise a plan to escape from the threatening rafters.

As the family attempts to discreetly leave the area, their escape plan is foiled when Wade threatens them with his gun. Tom faces a brutal assault, leaving the family in a state of panic and under duress.

Under the control of Wade and Terry, the family is forced to continue down the river at gunpoint. Stripped of their freedom, they must navigate through the treacherous waters while grappling with their growing fear.

As they approach a dangerous section of rapids, which is forbidden for rafting, a park ranger attempts to intervene. However, Wade reacting coldly to the situation threatens the ranger, leading to a tragic shooting incident.

In a dramatic climax, Tom resurfaces just in time to flip the raft over during a confrontation. He struggles to retrieve the gun that had fallen into the water while the family fights to reclaim their safety.

In a moment of bravery, Gail throws the bag of stolen money overboard, disrupting Wade and Terry's plans. This act escalates the tension as she ultimately turns the gun on Wade, signaling a turning point in their harrowing ordeal.

After an intense confrontation, Gail manages to eliminate Wade as a threat, ensuring the safety of her family. His body drifts away down the river, ending the immediate peril they faced.

The film concludes with the family being airlifted to safety, having survived a terrifying ordeal that tested their resolve and unity. They emerge from the experience changed yet stronger, reflecting on their resilience.
