The Princess and the Goblin

In the mountainous kingdom, the widowed King leaves to attend to state affairs, leaving Irene with her nursemaid. During Irene's forest outing, deformed animals corner her until a strange singing drives them away. The singer is Curdie, a miner's son, who explains that goblins are behind the threat. Only the King and his family remain skeptical, treating goblin tales as old miners' lore.

The next day, Irene discovers a magical secret door in her bedroom and ventures into a tower. There she meets the spirit of her Great-Great-Grandmother, also named Irene, who warns that the princess will soon be in grave danger. The warning foreshadows the goblin plot that will unfold.

Back in the mines, Curdie and his father work when Curdie falls through a pothole into the realm of the goblins. Hidden, he follows the goblins to a vast cavern where the Goblin King and Queen reveal their plan to flood the mines and drown humans. Prince Froglip boasts that humans exiled the goblins long ago and now they seek revenge.

Curdie escapes and warns his father, who decides to investigate the goblin kingdom. Rather than confronting it directly, Curdie sneaks out that night to learn more about their plans and returns to the goblin realm to gather further information.

Irene, guided by a magic invisible thread given by her grandmother, and her companion Turnip reach the goblin realm and locate Curdie. Irene frees Curdie and together they escape the goblins. The trio heads back toward safety as the danger intensifies.

Back in the kingdom, the miners are warned of the goblin flood plan. They begin erecting supports to keep the tunnels dry and prevent the water from washing through. The looming flood forces everyone to brace for a desperate battle.

The goblins launch their assault on the castle from a hidden tunnel, quickly gaining the upper hand and threatening the fortress. The royal family and the defenders scramble to hold the line against the unexpected invasion.

Curdie shows the people how to fight the invaders by stomping their feet and singing, rallying the defenders. The kingdom’s courage grows as the goblins begin to retreat from the castle's walls. The communal music becomes a weapon and symbol of resistance.

As the goblins retreat, they unleash floodwaters in a last-ditch effort to wipe out the humans. The waters race toward the castle and threaten to overwhelm the miners' supports at once. The kingdom braces for a catastrophic flood as the defense finally gives way.

Curdie realizes that if the miners are successful, the water will have nowhere to go but up and flood the castle. He tries to get everyone to evacuate and finds Irene being held captive by Froglip. The tension mounts as the floodwaters bear down on the ramparts.

With Irene's help, Curdie knocks Froglip off the castle ramparts, ending the goblin threat and saving the princess and the kingdom. The flood continues, but the crucial danger is contained as Froglip dies. The villagers witness a hard-won victory against overwhelming odds.

As the waters recede, the people celebrate their victory with song. The kingdom recognizes the bravery of the miners and young heroes who saved them, and peace returns to the land. The tale closes on a hopeful note of unity and song.
