In the mountainous kingdom, the widowed King leaves to attend to state affairs, leaving Irene with her nursemaid. During Irene's forest outing, deformed animals corner her until a strange singing drives them away. The singer is Curdie, a miner's son, who explains that goblins are behind the threat. Only the King and his family remain skeptical, treating goblin tales as old miners' lore.
