In March 1975, escalating tensions between China and the Soviet Union erupt into a devastating border conflict. This conflict signals the beginning of widespread chaos that leads to catastrophic consequences for humanity.

As a consequence of the conflict, biological warfare becomes a reality, unleashing a deadly plague across the globe. This leads to the decimation of populations, overwhelming cities and countries alike, as the virus spreads uncontrollably.

Col. Robert Neville finds himself in the ruins of Los Angeles, grappling with the reality that he may be the last human alive. In a desperate attempt to survive, he decides to inject himself with an experimental vaccine, leading to his unexpected immunity.

As days turn into weeks, Neville roams the deserted streets of the city, haunted by memories of martial law and the swift deaths of those around him. This sense of isolation fuels his determination to confront the Family, a ruthless cult formed from plague victims.

Neville's sanctuary atop a fortified apartment building is under constant threat from the Family, who employ ancient siege tactics to breach his defenses. By night, he battles the fear and tension that accompany their relentless assaults.

While scavenging in a department store, Neville sees a healthy woman, which causes his reality to shatter. Despite his brief pursuit, he loses her, leaving him to question his sanity amidst the grim reality of his life.

The Family eventually captures Neville, leading to a summary hearing by Jonathan Matthias, who condemns him to death. Tied to a giant wooden wheel in Dodger Stadium, Neville prepares to face his grim fate in front of the cult.

Just as Neville believes all hope is lost, he is unexpectedly rescued by Lisa and Dutch, fellow survivors. Together, they represent a glimmer of hope as they band together against the Family.

Inspired by the presence of Lisa and Dutch, Neville contemplates using his immunity to create a vaccine that could save humanity. This new purpose drives him deeper into the struggle against the Family.

As Neville and Lisa aspire to help her ailing brother, Richie, their plans are derailed when a generator fails, plunging them into darkness. This moment of vulnerability is seized by the Family, who launch a surprise attack on their stronghold.

In the midst of the chaos, Brother Zachary infiltrates Neville's safe space and threatens Lisa. Neville musters his courage, risking everything to save her and eliminating Zachary before tragedy strikes.

After successfully treating Richie with the serum he created, Neville learns that the Family's headquarters might be located at the Los Angeles Civic Center. His discovery comes with hope, but also with the threat of danger looming nearby.

Arriving at the Civic Center too late, Neville finds that Richie has fallen victim to Matthias' ruthless orders. This heartbreaking loss propels Neville into a fierce struggle against the Family, fueled by grief and anger.

As tragedy strikes, Lisa reveals her betrayal to Matthias, allowing the Family to breach Neville's sanctuary. With his stronghold in ruins, Neville is left battling despair as he faces the consequences of shattered trust.

In a desperate attempt to save Lisa, Neville is mortally wounded by Matthias. As dawn breaks, his lifeless body is discovered by Dutch and the remaining survivors, who take the blood serum and leave the devastated city behind.
