The Maltese Falcon

Private detective Sam Spade and his partner Miles Archer are approached by a mysterious woman named Miss Wonderly. She hires them to follow a man named Floyd Thursby, who she claims has run off with her younger sister, offering them a lucrative sum for the job.

Later that night, Spade receives devastating news from Detective Tom Polhaus that Archer has been shot and killed while following Thursby. The situation escalates when Spade learns that Thursby has also been killed and that he is now a suspect in Archer's murder due to his association with both men.

The following day, Archer's widow arrives at Spade's office, hinting at a romantic connection and accusing him of killing her husband. Unfazed by her accusations, Spade coldly dismisses her and instructs his secretary Effie to clear out Archer's belongings from the office.

Spade tracks down Brigid O'Shaughnessy based on an address from Miss Wonderly, discovering that she has deceived him about having a sister. He learns that Thursby was her acquaintance, revealing a deeper web of lies and deceit surrounding her motives.

Spade is approached by Joel Cairo, who offers him $5,000 to retrieve a mysterious figurine known as the black bird. Cairo's attempt to threaten Spade with a gun backfires when Spade disarms him, showcasing Spade's physical prowess and cunning.

Cairo and Brigid meet in Spade's apartment, discussing the black figurine and alluding to their mutual nervousness regarding a mysterious figure known as 'G.' During their conversation, tensions rise, ultimately leading to a physical altercation between the two.

As the police arrive, responding to the commotion, Spade concocts a story to explain the altercation between Cairo and O'Shaughnessy. The officers seem to buy his narrative, taking Cairo into custody while Spade sends Brigid to stay with Effie for her safety.

Spade meets with Casper Gutman, who reveals his desire to retrieve the coveted black bird figurine. Gutman details its extraordinary history and value, enticing Spade with the prospect of a handsome reward while simultaneously manipulating the situation with an air of intimidation.

An injured Captain Jacobi arrives at Spade's office, dying shortly after delivering a package containing the falcon. Startled by the sudden turn of events, Spade hides the figurine at a bus station to secure it and avoid losing it to his adversaries.

Spade receives misleading information from a drugged girl regarding Brigid O'Shaughnessy's location. After following the false lead, he returns to his apartment only to find a trap set by Gutman, Wilmer, and Cairo, leading to a tense confrontation.

In a high-stakes meeting, Gutman offers Spade $10,000 for the falcon, but insists on pinning the murders on Wilmer as a fall guy. The shocking revelations of Brigid’s involvement in Archer's murder surface, testing Spade's moral code and loyalty.
