Night Falls on Manhattan

As seasoned NYPD detectives, Liam Casey (Holm](/actor/andy-garcia)) and Joey Allegretto (Gandolfini) are on the trail of the infamous drug dealer Jordan Washington (Shiek Mahmud-Bey). When they receive a tip-off leading them to his hiding spot in an apartment complex, Casey makes a decisive move by shooting the lock off the door. However, Washington retaliates swiftly, leaving Casey gravely injured in the chaos that ensues. Amidst the police backup flooding the scene, Washington manages to make a daring escape in a stolen squad car, leaving two officers dead in his wake.

In the aftermath, District Attorney Morganstern (Leibman) decides to appoint Casey’s son, Sean (García](/actor/andy-garcia)), a former cop turned Assistant District Attorney, to take on the prosecution of Washington once he is caught. This choice sidelines the more seasoned Elihu Harrison (eore), who had his eyes set on a future election challenge.

During Washington’s trial, his lawyer, Sam Vigoda ([Dreyfuss), admits to the court that while his client is guilty of the officers’ deaths, he argues that Washington was a victim of a plot against him, manipulated by corrupt police led by Kurt Kleinhoff. Vigoda maintains that Washington became a target after he rejected an offer from rival dealer Carlos Alvarez to pay off corrupt officers even more handsomely. Despite his inexperience, Sean Casey proves to be a compelling advocate, skillfully dismantling Washington’s credibility and ultimately securing a guilty verdict that condemns Washington to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Following the trial, an unexpected romance blossoms between Sean and a member of Vigoda’s team, Peggy Lindstrom (Olin).

On a personal note, Vigoda reveals to Sean his deeper motivation for defending Washington: a devastating loss—his 15-year-old daughter’s overdose—has fueled his commitment to dismantle the corrupt system that empowers drug dealers. As Morganstern finds himself incapacitated, Sean is unexpectedly thrust into the political spotlight, stepping up as his father’s successor in the mayoral elections, where he confounds expectations by defeating Harrison.

As the investigation into police corruption intensifies, shocking truths begin to surface, such as the gruesome discovery of Kleinhoff’s decomposed body. The investigation reveals a contacts list linked to various precincts, implicating multiple officers in the web of corruption surrounding Washington’s case. In a startling turn of events, Allegretto, once regarded as a paragon of integrity, confesses to taking bribes and colluding with corrupted colleagues to murder Washington. Tragically, he subsequently takes his own life, leaving behind a legacy of broken trust and ruined lives.

The scandal escalates as Sean’s own role in the forgery of Washington’s arrest warrant comes to light, sending ripples through the justice system. Seeking counsel from Morganstern, now recuperating in the hospital, Sean learns that the role of District Attorney will indeed be challenging, but he is reassured that he possesses the necessary integrity and leadership to navigate this new path.

In a crucial meeting with Judge Dominick Impelliteri (Chianese), Sean confesses his involvement in the warrant forgery, leading the judge to backdate a new warrant to the day of the raid, circumventing any legal complications. He advises Sean to erase the forged document from existence, emphasizing the critical need for transparency.

Vigoda impresses upon Sean the importance of not resigning, revealing his real motivation is to seek justice against the corruption rather than exacting revenge on Washington. As the tumult finally settles, Casey embraces his new footing by imparting wisdom to a class of aspiring assistant district attorneys, urging them to uphold the values of integrity and diligence in their quest for justice.

The film draws to a close with a resonant message. Sean stands before his students, igniting their passion for justice with the same unwavering commitment that he has embraced throughout his journey.
