Phillip Reed, a divorce attorney, is tired of one-night stands and longs for a real connection. He watches friends Linda and Jack drift through life as a couple and can’t shake the feeling that romance is passing him by, a sense that grows each time he witnesses mundane, predictable married bliss around him.

At a football game, Gloria Franklin, who is getting married in two weeks, discovers that her fiancé Jason Elliot is sneaking off to Las Vegas for a bachelor weekend. Annoyed by his casual attitude and convinced she’s still capable of one last fling, she treats this as a challenge to prove him wrong.

Soon after, Phillip and Gloria cross paths again at the zoo, where she shocks him by telling him her real name is Marsha Lyons. They click immediately, and Gloria/Marsha promises she’ll call Phillip, though she almost slips into confessing she’s engaged. The spark between them is unmistakable, and Phillip feels his world tilt toward something unexpected.

Back at the office, Phillip’s conversations with clients about failed marriages only deepen his fixation on this mysterious woman. After a brief, decisive encounter with Joanie, a casual fling of his own, Phillip shifts his attention fully toward the possibility of Gloria, even as he tries to focus on work with his colleague Drew and Bev, Bev, who keep both feet on the ground.

Gloria, however, isn’t sure she’ll call him back. Her friend Mimi nudges her toward a decision, and then a misunderstanding in Las Vegas—where her call is picked up by another woman—sparks feelings of betrayal. Yet Gloria eventually summons the courage to call Phillip and asks him to come with her to Acapulco the very next morning.

Their impulsive trip becomes a whirlwind of adventure: a car catches fire, they hitch a ride with local farm workers, and they finally arrive at Gloria/Marsha’s parents’ gleaming home in Acapulco. They revel in the city’s dining and dancing, and their connection deepens to the point of sleeping together. The next morning, Phillip awakes to find Gloria/Marsha has already left, a clue that will propel both of them back toward very different decisions.

Phillip returns to LA and confides in Drew and Bev about the whirlwind, only to learn that the truth is more complicated than a summer fling. The film then shifts to a courthouse scene where Phillip pleads to delay the Fields’s hearing so Gloria can reconsider. Meanwhile, he searches for Gloria/Marsha, pressing his luck by returning to Acapulco; a hotel break-in and a jail stint follow, and Drew helps him regain his footing. Back in town, Phillip tracks down Mrs. Franklin, but she refuses him entry and has her son throw him out.

Refusing to give up, Phillip floods downtown with dozens of roses addressed to the Franklins, each bearing a note asking Gloria not to marry. The romantic overture leads to a tense phone call that brings them to the zoo once more, where Gloria talks around her feelings and ultimately boards a bus rather than face him directly.

In a revelation-filled turn, Jason’s wedding plans come to light: his betrothed is Gloria, and the ceremony is set in a downtown hotel. Phillip one- ups the clock by racing through hotels with Linda and Jack to stop the ceremony, hoping to save a future with the woman who has invaded his thoughts since their first meeting.

The ending settles the core choice. Gloria walks away from the unfaithful groom at the altar, and she and Phillip walk together through the zoo—the very place where their connection began—entering a hopeful chapter built on honesty, courage, and the chance for real romance. Along the way, several pivotal moments echo the theme of believing in a lasting bond, including Walt’s old-school wisdom that he knew Sophia was the one, spoken to Phillip at a quiet courthouse bench.
