The Last Kiss

Michael, portrayed by Zach Braff, is navigating the complexities of his relationship with his live-in girlfriend Jenna, played by Jacinda Barrett. At 29 years old, Michael seems to have it all—except for peace of mind. Jenna is ten weeks pregnant and her parents are pressuring the duo to marry. However, Jenna insists that their busy lives, hers with a dissertation and his with work, make this an inconvenient time for tying the knot. The truth is, Michael feels trapped and overwhelmed, making him question their path together.

Compounding his confusion are his friends: Izzy, who is hurting after a rough breakup with Arianna, and Chris, who has a strained relationship with his wife, Lisa. Observing the shaky foundations of their marriages, Michael grows increasingly wary of commitment. He turns to Kim, portrayed by Rachel Bilson, whom he meets by chance at a wedding, as an escape from his troubles. Kim sees through his struggles, playfully suggesting he’s about to break up with Jenna, but Michael, despite being drawn to her youthful charm, manages to resist the temptation.

As the situation escalates with Jenna proposing they settle down and buy a house, Michael panics, realizing the enormity of his feelings and responsibilities. Unbeknownst to Jenna, even her own parents are grappling with their crumbling relationship—her mother, Anna, is entangled in an affair, revealing cracks in what Jenna believed to be a model marriage.

When Michael meets Kim again, sparks fly, leading to a whirlwind party and a moment of intimacy that he ultimately turns down due to guilt. The situation spirals out of control when Jenna, after hearing conflicting stories from their friends, confronts Michael about his honesty. One evening, after a heart-wrenching confrontation and armed with a chef’s knife, Jenna kicks Michael out of their home, leaving him to grapple with his choices.

In a moment of weakness, Michael succumbs to Kim’s advances, only to face the consequences when he tries to sneak out the next morning. Amidst the chaos, he also learns that his friend Izzy has lost his father, drawing them all together as they support him. Realizing the depth of his feelings for Jenna as she arrives at the wake, Michael seeks her forgiveness, albeit influenced by the stern words of her father, Stephen.

However, his honesty about his night with Kim backfires, leading Jenna to storm out one final time, driving Michael to camp out on her porch in a desperate bid to win her back. Throughout rain and shine, he lays bare his devotion, ultimately prompting Jenna to open up about her pain. “It was a kiss with very painful feeling,” she says, comparing it to the loss of her grandmother, showcasing the raw emotions wrapped in their complicated love.
