The Last Fling

Phillip first encounters Gloria at the zoo, where their connection is instant. She introduces herself with the alias Marsha Lyons, hinting at a playful side. They quickly click, laying the groundwork for a romance neither expects.

Back at the office, Phillip can't stop thinking about Marsha and barely notices his clients. His distraction bothers his coworkers, especially Drew. When he runs into Joanie, a woman he's been seeing casually, he ends things to pursue Gloria.

Gloria, encouraged by her friend Mimi, invites Phillip to join her on a weekend trip to Mexico and he agrees to go the next morning. Their journey to Acapulco is chaotic: the car catches fire and they end up hitchhiking with local farm workers. They finally reach Gloria's parents' house in Acapulco and share a night of romance.

The morning after their night, Phillip wakes to find Gloria has already left. He learns she is engaged but hasn't fully disclosed the truth to him. He is left with the ache of being the 'last fling' she never intended to mention.

Back in LA, Phillip goes to work and tells Drew and Bev about what happened. The newsroom banter underscores how unrealistic it is to expect to locate Gloria in a week. He continues to be preoccupied with her.

Gloria spends time with Mimi and becomes introspective about her dull life with Jason. She finally tells Jason the truth about her weekend, but does so in a sarcastic way that he misreads as a joke. He scolds her for not following household chores, exposing their conflicts.

Late to the courthouse, Phillip is encouraged by Walt's story about long-time love. With newfound resolve, he asks the judge to postpone the Fields' hearing to give them time to reconsider. The gesture signals his desire to buy Gloria more time.

Phillip travels to Acapulco and breaks into the beach house to retrieve a name from a pill bottle, only to get arrested. Drew bails him out and in LA he locates Gloria's mother, Mrs. Franklin, but her son throws him out. The pursuit reveals how elusive Gloria remains.

Phillip begins sending dozens of roses to downtown Franklin homes with a note pleading for Marsha not to marry. Gloria phones him, and they arrange to meet, reigniting their connection. The pursuit intensifies as both realize they cannot ignore their feelings.

At the zoo, Gloria talks around their future, listing things they'd have to cancel and avoiding saying she doesn't love him. She avoids commitment and then hops on a bus, signaling a partial retreat. Phillip remains determined.

Jason accidentally reveals Gloria's real name, and the wedding is set for a downtown hotel. He enlists Linda and Jack to race between major hotels to locate the ceremony. They finally find it at the third hotel and prepare to intervene.

Phillip interrupts the wedding and argues that he and Gloria belong together. Gloria leaves her fiancé at the altar and agrees to start a life with Phillip. The film closes with the couple strolling in the zoo, the place of their first connection.
