What Happens in One Last Fling: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of One Last Fling (1949) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In New York, Olivia Pearce runs her husband Larry Pearce's music store while he's off serving in the war. When Larry returns, he needs someone to head the sales department, but he chooses his uncle's secretary, Gaye Winston, over his wife.

A misunderstanding balloons when Olivia believes the job is hers. Larry, caught between it all, assigns the position to Gaye and invites her to lunch to explain. Olivia, dining at a different table in the same restaurant, notices her husband with a woman and tells her lunch companion, Vera Thompson, that she isn’t really jealous—she insists the only woman Larry ever showed interest in was Gaye Winston, a name she mentions in passing.

Suddenly, Vic Lardner storms into the restaurant, accusing Larry of stealing his wife. The twist becomes clear: Gaye and Vic are married. Olivia witnesses the scene from across the room, packs Larry's bags at home, and announces a divorce. When Larry explains his rationale—that he wanted Gaye to have the job—Olivia takes offense and sends him away.

Months pass, and fate brings Larry and Vic together again in a bar. They settle their differences after Vic reveals that he and Gaye have reconciled. With that peace in place, Larry resolves to mend things with Olivia, but time slips by as they continually miss one another. Ultimately, the pair find their way back to each other, and the story closes on a hopeful, contented note.

One Last Fling Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about One Last Fling (1949): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Larry hire Gaye Winston instead of his wife for the sales position?

Larry hired Gaye Winston, his uncle's secretary, to head the sales department because she had previous experience as a secretary. He didn't consider Olivia for the role, even though she had successfully run the music store alone during the war. This choice unintentionally insulted Olivia, suggesting her wartime work wasn't enough to qualify her for the position.

Q2

Why did Vic Lardner accuse Larry of stealing his wife?

Vic Lardner burst into the restaurant accusing Larry because he believed Larry was having an affair with Gaye Winston. The misunderstanding stemmed from seeing Larry having lunch alone with another woman. In reality, Gaye was Vic's wife, and the lunch was a business meeting to explain why Larry had hired her for the sales position.

Q3

Why was Olivia offended when Larry explained his reason for hiring Gaye?

Olivia was offended because Larry's explanation revealed he hadn't considered her for the job at all, he simply wanted to give Gaye, a former secretary, a position. When Larry tried to clarify his intentions by saying he only wanted to help Gaye, it made Olivia feel even more sidelined and undervalued, as if her years of running the store meant nothing to him.
