Thorn, Don Semeraro, King of the Gods, grants the Sword of the Sacred Graal to Ator, Eric Allan Kramer, ruler of the Akili, to bring justice to his people and lead them back to their home in the Middle World. When Thorn returns to reclaim it, Ator refuses, determined to pass the blade to his young son. Dejanira, Marisa Mell, an immortal, arrives in time to plead for Ator’s life. Yet Thorn strikes, kills Ator, and splits the sword in two, commanding Dejanira to be imprisoned in a circle of fire until a human arrives strong enough to free her, at which point she will lose her immortality.
Years earlier, Sunn, Dina Morrone, Ator’s mother, entrusts him and the sword fragments to Grindel, the ugly sorcerer gnome, asking for a death potion. Grindel instead gives a love potion, sleeps with Sunn, and curses her to a life of poverty and prostitution until a man comes who embraces her as a mother.
As Ator nears eighteen, Nephele, Marisa Mell the soothsayer, appears with a vision of Dejanira and reveals the destiny that binds them. He tracks down the fragments hidden in Grindel’s cave, forges the pieces into a single blade, and kills the gnome with the weapon’s newfound power.
Following Nephele’s guidance, Ator ventures into the Western Kingdom, entering a treacherous cave where he faces deadly robotic warrior twins and a dragon breathing fire, later offering the cave’s riches as tribute to the Gods. In a separate cave, he finds and frees Dejanira, an act that stirs Thorn’s wrath and triggers a volcanic eruption that causes the cave to crumble around them.
In a tavern, Ator encounters his mother Sunn and, not recognizing her at first, rescues her from an abusive client. When Sunn finally recognizes him and clings to him, Grindel’s curse lifts—only to leave her old and dying in his arms.
After laying Sunn to rest, Ator persists on his quest through the Eastern Kingdom, where he and Dejanira confront the treachery of King Gunther, Donald O’Brien, and his sister Grimilde, Laura Gemser. The journey tests his strength, courage, and sense of home as he journeys toward reuniting his people with the Middle World.
In the end, a path forward is forged through courage, sacrifice, and the resolve to reunite a people with a homeland, even as ancient powers and bitter schemes threaten to keep them apart.
