Veronica “Ronnie” Miller, a bright and sensitive 17-year-old, has spent years at odds with her father after her parents’ divorce. The rift runs deep: she stopped playing the piano—the very instrument that connected her to her late mother—while her father, a former Juilliard professor and concert pianist, lives a quieter life in Wrightsville Beach, Georgia. Ronnie, whose rebellious streak has only grown since the split, travels with her younger brother, Jonah, to spend the summer with him, hoping to bridge a gap that seems larger every day. On arrival, Ronnie strikes up an uneasy friendship with Blaze, a local outcast who shares a tense living situation with her boyfriend, Marcus. The fragile balance of trust is shattered when Marcus makes an unwanted advance toward Ronnie. Blaze, misreading Ronnie’s flustered reaction as flirting, retaliates by framing her for shoplifting—a moment that heightens Ronnie’s sense of injustice and isolation in a town that already feels claustrophobic.
During this visit Ronnie also discovers a loggerhead sea turtle nest near her father’s house. As she guards the nest from raccoons, she meets Will Blakelee, a handsome and popular volunteer at the local aquarium who has his own circle of friends and a complicated dating history. What begins with guarded curiosity slowly deepens into something more meaningful as Ronnie spends the night protecting the eggs and gradually allows herself to be drawn to Will. The next day Will invites Ronnie to the aquarium, and their undeniable chemistry becomes harder to ignore. Ronnie, wary of getting tangled in another romance, tries to pull away after learning of Will’s dating past, but his kiss pulls her back in. The connection they share soon expands beyond a summer romance. Will takes Ronnie to the large, gated mansion where he lives with his family, and the two discover a shared warmth as he opens up about the loss of his brother. In that moment, they admit their feelings for each other, and a sincere bond begins to form between them.
As the relationship blossoms, Ronnie overhears townsfolk buzzing about a church fire and hints that her father might be implicated. When she voices her worries to Will, he asks his best friend Scott to reveal the truth, but Scott refuses, torn between loyalty and truth. The couple’s happiness is interrupted by a crisis closer to home: a painful medical diagnosis for Steve, Ronnie and Jonah’s father. While watching the turtle eggs hatch with the family, Steve collapses and is rushed to the hospital, where it’s revealed he has terminal cancer that has metastasized to his lungs. Ronnie stays by Steve’s side in the hospital, while Jonah and Will return home to continue work on a stained-glass window that was lost in the fire. As Steve’s illness progresses, he eventually asks for hospice care, a decision that brings Ronnie and Jonah closer as they face the end together.
Behind the scenes, Scott and Will eventually confess to Steve that the church fire had been an accident—an act of mischief by friends that got out of hand—and they had mistakenly allowed Steve to absorb the blame. Steve chooses not to involve law enforcement, but Ronnie is furious that her father carried that guilt for so long. The revelation strains Ronnie and Will’s relationship, and she makes the painful choice to end things with him in the wake of the truth.
With their family fractured and Jonah preparing to move back to New York City with their mother, Kim, Ronnie remains in Georgia to care for Steve and to repair the fragile bond she has with him. She pours herself into a piano composition Steve had written titled “For Ronnie,” determined to give him one last sense of connection and meaning. Steve sits beside her as she plays, and he dies just as the final notes fade, leaving Ronnie to confront a life newly clarified by loss.
At the funeral, Ronnie offers a quiet, heartfelt tribute—no words could quite capture how wonderful her father was, so she plays their own song instead, letting the music speak what she cannot. Outside the church, Will reappears and compliments the performance before slipping back into the crowd. Ronnie has decided to pursue Juilliard, packing her belongings with mixed emotions, when she sees Will again. He explains his decision to transfer to Columbia University to be with her, and the moment culminates in a passionate kiss, signaling a new beginning built on forgiveness, shared memory, and a hope for a future together.
