In 1981, aspiring vocalist Olivia King takes the stage at a small Atlanta lounge, where a music executive hints at a world of opportunities waiting in the bigger market of New York City. Olivia weighs the possibility, but ultimately declines, returning home to her husband Adam Harris, who dismisses her dreams and tells her to stay put. Feeling depressed, conflicted, and trapped in her marriage, Olivia leaves in the middle of the night, promising to return for her daughter.
Eighteen years later in St. Louis, a 19-year-old Kayla Harris has won a contest to meet the star she adores. After Olivia’s concert, Kayla and the singer share a meal during which Kayla details her own musical ambitions and invites Olivia to attend a performance at a small local club. When Kayla returns home, Adam learns that the star Kayla met was Olivia but does not tell Kayla the truth. The next day, Adam confronts Olivia at her concert venue, warning her to stay away from their daughter. At Kayla’s performance, she worries that Olivia will not appear, but she does, shortly after Kayla begins to sing. After the show, Olivia reveals to Kayla that she is her mother. This news leaves Kayla stunned and upset, and she quickly leaves the club. After an argument with Adam, she refuses to speak to Olivia, even when Olivia offers to help with her career. Kayla’s best friend advises her to accept Olivia’s help, as it is the least she owes her.
Kayla reluctantly agrees to go to New York with Olivia, who makes determined attempts to build a relationship with her daughter. Olivia introduces Kayla to industry contacts, and with her strong recommendation and Kayla’s talent, she is quickly signed to a recording contract. While beginning to record her first album, Kayla continues to live with Olivia in a penthouse apartment, as Olivia tries not to be overbearing while pursuing success as a mentor and single mother. Kayla then begins a steamy romance with the older music executive, Ric Ortega, whom Olivia does not trust and warns against, but Kayla ignores her. Despite growing success and a debut hit, “Have You Ever?”, Kayla harbors bitter feelings toward Olivia, which boil over at the label’s Grammy Party. After Kayla’s performance, Olivia is asked to perform by the head of the label, a moment Kayla resents as she feels Olivia is stealing her spotlight. Kayla moves in with Ric, but soon learns that he revealed her true parentage to the press and betrayed her, leading to a painful breakup. Grief and a need for understanding bring mother and daughter back together, and Kayla follows Olivia to a cabin where they spend time talking openly for the first time. They begin to understand each other more deeply, and Kayla processes her feelings about her mother and the path she has chosen.
The film closes with Olivia and Kayla returning to St. Louis for Kayla’s concert, where Kayla calls her mother to the stage and the two share a heartfelt duet, “Love Is All That Matters.” The audience—friends, family, and collaborators—watches as a strained relationship finds its way toward reconciliation, framed by the shared music and the new sense of family.
Originally airing on ABC, the telefilm later found renewed life in syndication on VH1, MTV, BET, Centric, and TV One, where it remains a recurring audience favorite and a Nielsen ratings success.
