After his best friend Mike Fletcher dies of a drug overdose, Jack Magnus, a businessman in the San Fernando Valley, spirals into deep depression and drug addiction that destabilizes every part of his life. He loses his job, develops a severe infection on his left arm, and becomes homeless, forced to shelter in the warehouse where he works as a security guard.

One night, a pair of dealers to whom he owes money break into the warehouse and decide to rob the building, aiming to kill him since Jack has no money to offer. They inject a dangerous cocktail of PCP, heroin, and crystal meth, hoping to end him quickly. Instead, the drugs drive Jack into a psychotic break, filled with paranoid delusions and a haunting vision of Mike, and he fights back with an electrical jackhammer found in the warehouse’s machine shop, killing the dealers.

When Jack’s sister Tori Magnus and her girlfriend arrive, after he had phoned them for money, he locks Tori in a storage room and murders her girlfriend. After killing his boss, who had stopped by to say the building had been sold, Jack experiences a flood of hallucinations and collapses in the street. In the morning, he murders the realtor and the buyer his boss was going to meet, and as the cleaning crew hired by the realtor arrives, Jack kills two members of the crew, incapacitates one with a drug injection, and chases the final member, Sam, through the warehouse and onto the roof.

When the extension cord of the jackhammer becomes unplugged, Jack tries to strangle Sam to death, but is stopped by the escaped Tori, who attempts to reason with him. When talk fails, Tori knocks him off the roof with a detached piece of the discarded jackhammer. As Jack lies bleeding in the street, the hallucinatory Mike appears and yells at him to get up. When Sam and Tori exit the warehouse moments later, they both scream at the sight that Jack is gone.
