Sledgehammer (1983) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sledgehammer (1983), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In a remote house, Mary Mendez as Mother locks her young son in a closet, then slips away to meet the man she is cheating on her husband with, Michael Shanahan as Lover. The two lovers plan to abandon their spouses, but an unseen killer arrives and murders them with a sledgehammer. When authorities arrive, the bodies are found and the boy is presumed dead, leaving a hollow sense of tragedy that haunts the house.

Ten years later, seven friends rent the same house to throw a reckless party. They are driven to the location in a van by Ray Lawrence as The Driver, who leaves afterward to pick them up later. That night, Chuck, played by Ted Prior, persuades everyone to take part in a séance meant to summon the spirits of the couple and learn who killed them. The prank, masterminded in part by Joey, portrayed by Stephen Wright, unexpectedly succeeds in conjuring the missing boy’s ghost—a towering figure with a smiling translucent mask. The spirit wastes no time and murders Joey with a knife to the neck, then hides the body. By the next day, the specter returns to claim Jimmy and Carol, killing them while they’re intimate; Carol is snapped by the neck and Jimmy is struck in the chest with a sledgehammer.

The surviving four teens hole up in the house, hoping to ride out the night. John, brought to life by John Eastman, ventures off in search of the killer and uncovers a disturbing scene: a skull in a closet, a newspaper clipping about the boy’s disappearance, and the severed bodies of Carol and Jimmy arranged near a blood-red Satanic pentagram. John is confronted by the ghost and killed with a knife in the back. The phantom then corners Mary, and is found stabbing her to death by Chuck and Joni, having regressed to the form of the boy. The boy’s voice—portrayed by Justin Greer as the Boy (young)—explains that he killed his mother because she took him away from his father to continue her affair. The spirit shifts back to an adult form, knocks Chuck unconscious, and goes after Joni. Joni fights back long enough for Chuck to recover, and he grabs the sledgehammer, delivering a final, brutal blow that seems to defeat the killer.

As dawn arrives, Joni and Chuck slip outside to welcome the morning light, unaware that the boy’s spirit still watches from the upstairs window, a silent sentinel to the tragedies that unfolded inside the house.
