The film Ip Man chronicles the life of the legendary Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), starting from his experiences in the 1930s in Foshan, through his harrowing escape to Hong Kong following the Second Sino-Japanese War, and ultimately leading to the events before his death.
The narrative opens with Ip Man reflecting on the philosophies of martial arts, transitioning into a gripping scene where he engages in a fierce battle against a dozen opponents in the rain. Victorious, he is drawn into poignant flashbacks of his earlier life, highlighting his commencement in martial arts at the tender age of seven, his mentorship under Chan Wah-shun (played by Yuen Woo-ping), and his marriage to his beloved wife, Cheung Wing-sing (Hye-kyo Song).
However, his peaceful existence faces turmoil when the formidable Gong Yutian (Qingxiang Wang), a grandmaster from the Wudang Boxing school in Northern China, declares that he has appointed his heir, Ma San (Jin Zhang), and insists that the South should also have its champion. What follows is an intense series of challenges among various martial artists attempting to confront Gong, all of which are thwarted by Ma San.
In a surprising twist, Gong Yutian’s daughter, Gong Er (Ziyi Zhang), arrives to dissuade her father from continuing the grapples, believing they are not worthy. Ultimately, it is decided that Ip Man will represent the Southern masters. He faces tests from three of them before finally challenging Gong Yutian. Their encounter transcends physical combat, evolving into a deep philosophical dialogue. Gong concedes the match to Ip, but soon after, Gong Er seeks to redeem her family’s honor by challenging him herself, setting the stakes high: if anything breaks during their duel, Ip will lose.
Their battle showcases an electrifying display where the victor must maintain precision, as emphasized by Ip, but it concludes with Gong Er emerging victorious when Ip inadvertently breaks a piece of furniture. Despite the rivalry, the two part amicably, with Ip expressing a desire for a future rematch.
As time passes, Ip Man and Gong Er engage in a correspondence filled with respect and understanding, although their paths diverge due to the eruption of war in 1938. Amidst the chaos, Ip falls into poverty and endures the heart-wrenching loss of his two daughters to starvation. Meanwhile, Ma San betrays his heritage, becoming a Hanjian, which culminates in the assassination of Gong Yutian. When Gong Er returns to the present, she confronts her family for their neglect of her father’s legacy, only to be told to let go of her desire for revenge. Nevertheless, she resolutely chooses a path of vengeance, forsaking personal happiness.
Seeking to rebuild his life, Ip Man relocates to Hong Kong, aspiring to teach martial arts, but he encounters numerous formidable challengers. Proving his superiority, he builds a name for himself. On Chinese New Year’s Eve in 1950, he reunites with Gong Er, proposing another contest while encouraging her to restore her martial arts school. However, she declines the offer, reflecting on the transient nature of martial arts over history.
Flashbacks reveal a pivotal confrontation between Gong Er and Ma San in 1940 during another festivity, where she bested him but suffered grave injuries, leading to her later dependence on opium as a painkiller, marking a tragic turning point in her life. The story hurtles forward to 1952, the last meeting between Ip Man and Gong Er, who confesses her long-held feelings, only to pass away shortly thereafter.
In a reflective voiceover, Ip recounts the tragic end of Gong Er, whose battle with Ma San led to her downfall. The film concludes with a visual montage showcasing the success of Ip Man’s martial arts school, signaling his instrumental role in popularizing Wing Chun globally, notably mentoring one of martial arts’ most famous figures, Bruce Lee. Finally, it is stated that Ip Man passed away in 1972, leaving a legacy that continued to inspire countless martial artists worldwide.
