Gong Yutian appoints his heir, Ma San, who begins to challenge the various Southern masters, seeking to establish superiority. These challenges emphasize the tension between Northern and Southern martial arts.

Gong Yutian's daughter, Gong Er, steps in to stop the endless challenges, believing the fights are beneath their honor. Her strong character challenges traditional views on the conflicts between martial arts schools.

With rising tensions, it is decided that Ip Man will represent the Southern masters against Gong Yutian. This pivotal moment transforms him from a local fighter into a significant contender in martial arts.

In the turbulence of war, Ma San betrays his Southern heritage, ultimately leading to the assassination of Gong Yutian. This act of betrayal adds another layer of conflict within the martial arts community.

In search of a new beginning, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong to teach martial arts, faced with numerous challengers. He gradually builds a reputation, cementing his place in the martial arts world.

On Chinese New Year's Eve in 1950, Ip Man and Gong Er reunite, discussing the possibility of another contest. Despite his encouragement for her to restore her martial arts school, Gong Er reflects on the fleeting nature of martial arts.

Flashbacks reveal Gong Er's fierce duel with Ma San during a festival in 1940. Although she emerges victorious, the battle leaves her with serious injuries, leading to her tragic dependence on opium for pain relief.

In 1952, Ip Man meets Gong Er one last time, where she confesses her long-held feelings for him. Unfortunately, she passes away shortly thereafter, marking a poignant end to their relationship.

A reflective voiceover reveals the impact of Gong Er's downfall on Ip Man, who ultimately continues to teach and promote Wing Chun. He passes away in 1972, leaving behind an enduring legacy that inspires generations of martial artists, including Bruce Lee.
