Martha, an attractive housewife, lives in a quiet rural apartment building on the outskirts of Madrid. With her husband, Carlos, away on frequent business trips, she passes long days in solitary routine, her only companion a cat named Fedra. The stillness of the building is punctuated by the heavy footsteps she begins to hear tracing from the apartment above hers, where the alluring upstairs neighbor, Julia, also endures a similar isolation as her own husband, Victor, is away on business.

From this fragile setup unfolds a tension-filled curiosity. Martha, a woman who often lets her imagination wander to fill the emptiness of her days, starts to suspect that something foul has happened to Julia’s sick husband. Julia, for her part, insists that Victor left town for work, but the absence feels unusually prolonged to Martha. The whispers grow louder when Martha notes small, puzzling details: Julia asks to put things in Martha’s fridge even though her own refrigerator is functioning, and there are odd rumors about the landlord’s dogs being fed something suspiciously out of the ordinary. The sense that something is off intensifies as Martha’s suspicions crystallize into a plan to uncover the truth.

Martha’s world widens with visits from Rita, a friend who brings her young daughter Yolanda along. In confidence, Martha shares her fear that Julia has a lover and that both she and Julia might be responsible for Victor’s disappearance. The conversation takes a dangerous turn when the indiscreet Yolanda tells Julia what she heard, muddying loyalties and making Martha’s accusations feel all the more risky and real. The circle of suspicion widens further as other tenants move through the building’s corridors: downstairs lives Ricardo, a sculptor and landlord whose own passions—dogs, pigs, and a stubborn attention to his surroundings—color the atmosphere. Rosa, a milk-delivery girl from the nearby farm, carries a quiet interest toward Ricardo, while Ricardo’s attention gradually shifts toward Martha, drawing her into a complicated web of desire and jealousy. The arrival of Pedro, the grocery delivery man, adds another layer to the tension: he too seems to have feelings for Martha, and his interactions with Julia hint at an entangled set of affairs. When Martha rebuffs Pedro, the tension escalates and Pedro’s threats hit close to home, reminding everyone that the walls of the building are listening.

A shadowy figure lurks in the background, spying on the three women and snapping provocative photographs that linger on the screen, hinting at a larger entanglement of eyes and motives. The drama accelerates toward a catastrophic revelation: Carlos has indeed been carrying on an affair with Julia, and the two of them conspire to kill Victor as part of a plan that would, in turn, force Julia to kill Martha. Yet as the conspirators close in, Ricardo arrives in time to alter the course of events, and he shoots Carlos dead. In the aftermath, a knowing look passes between Ricardo and Julia, and the on-screen photos confirm the long-suspected truth: Ricardo was the voyeur behind the camera, the unseen observer who turned the tenants’ private lives into public evidence. The film ends with this chilling reversal, leaving the audience to ponder the boundaries between desire, betrayal, and the ever-watchful gaze that records it all.
