The Free Fall

Sarah witnesses her mother murder her father in the family home. She then attempts suicide in the bathtub and wakes up beside Nick with only fractured memories and distorted recollections of people and clothing. The sequence establishes an unreliable reality that threads through the rest of the story.

Sarah has several unsettling interactions with Rose, the household maid. Nick keeps dosing her with pills while he works on a book, creating a sense of control over her mind. The combination deepens the impression that someone is orchestrating events behind the scenes.

During a banquet, Sarah stabs an attendee in the hand with a fork after a misinterpreted trigger. Rose drugs her wine, and she blacks out. When she comes to, she is in the bathtub again, with Nick wearing a pig mask, who reveals that she actually stabbed the guest in the neck—and that this was the final step toward bringing her home.

Sarah escapes Nick and retrieves a key from a stranger who claims to be a friend of her sister Julie. The stranger warned that a locked third-floor door leads to the roof and safety from her suicidal urges. Using the key, she opens the door and steps into a dark corridor that promises answers.

Opening the door, she enters a pitch-black room with a bright light at the far end. The former dinner guests who are now dead attack her, forcing a desperate escape toward the light. She emerges in a library that holds a book titled Rose, beginning a symbolic journey into the mystery.

In the library, Sarah discovers a book named Rose showing Eve in the Garden of Eden with the serpent. The pages all bear the word 'apple,' and she realizes Nick's manuscript titled Sarah contains nothing but 'apple' repeated endlessly. The discovery reframes the mystery as a pattern of manipulation and control.

Desperate to escape, Sarah reaches a window where the stranger appears to help. Nick materializes and tries to convince her this is all in her head, but the stranger throws holy water through the window, burning Nick's face. This moment shatters Nick's hold and gives Sarah a chance to leap to safety.

Sarah awakens to reality as the priest reveals he has been performing an exorcism in her parents' home. He explains that Nick is a demon inhabiting her body and that the exorcism has begun to separate the spirit from the flesh. He warns that Sarah remains in danger and must fill herself with light and God.

With the exorcism seemingly successful, the priest cautions that residual danger remains and urges her to maintain spiritual protection. The scene emphasizes the fragile boundary between safety and possession and leaves the future uncertain.

Back in the house, Julie turns to Sarah and offers the same pills Nick used. The demon possessing Julie proclaims that things will be different now, signaling that the possession has moved to a new host and that danger persists.

The film ends with a close-up on Sarah's eye, suggesting the struggle within continues and that the threat may return. The image leaves the audience with lingering dread about Sarah’s fate and the power of the demon.
