The Free Fall (2021) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Free Fall (2021), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In this tense, unsettling psychological horror, Sarah begins a new life after marrying Nick. But a brutal memory intrudes: she witnesses her mother murder her father and then attempt suicide in the bathtub of her parents’ home. When she wakes, her husband is at her side, yet almost nothing about the pre-wedding days feels real. The world around her shifts in uncanny ways—faces, clothes, and even the way people look at her seem altered, turning everyday scenes into puzzles she struggles to parse.

The sense that something is seriously off deepens as she encounters the couple’s maid, Rose. Rose’s presence becomes increasingly sinister: she appears at odd moments, and soon she begins drugging [Sarah]’s wine and helping Nick with his work on a book. At a banquet, the tension erupts when [Sarah] stabs an attendee in the hand with a fork, a moment she cannot fully grasp and cannot explain away. The memory fragments blur with waking, until she blacks out again.

She wakes in a bathtub once more, this time to find Nick wearing a pig mask and tending to her. He drops a devastating revelation: the stabbing was actually to the guest’s neck, not the hand, and that act was the final step he needed to claim her “home.” The atmosphere thickens with fear as she realizes she may be being groomed, controlled, and pushed toward a fate she cannot resist.

Desperate to reclaim some control, she escapes to her room and uses a key given by a stranger who claimed to be a friend of her sister, [Julie]. The key opens a door on the third floor that had been sealed for her safety, a door that leads to a roof and a place where she might attempt to end the mounting danger. Beyond the door lies a pitch-black chamber with a single, dazzling light on the far side. As she advances, the figures from the dinner party—the people she thought were alive—launch a violent attack. She fights for her life, finally finding a way through the light and into a library where a peculiar book named Rose sits on a shelf.

In the library, the book’s pages reveal a stark motif: the word “apple” repeats endlessly on every page. It becomes clear that the manuscript Nick has been writing about [Sarah] is titled Sarah and contains nothing but the same word repeated hundreds of times, a disturbing cue to manipulation and control. The escape seems near when the stranger who gave her the key reappears outside the window, but Nick follows and tries to persuade her that everything is an illusion. A dramatic moment arrives when the stranger throws holy water through the window, scorching Nick’s face and exposing the lie for what it is.

Seizing the chance, [Sarah] leaps from the window and lands in a different reality: a priest has been performing an exorcism inside the family home, and Nick is revealed to be a demon inhabiting her body. The exorcism appears to succeed, but the safety it promises is provisional at best; the priest warns that she must keep herself bathed in light and faith to ward off further possession. The tension persists as the story pivots toward a new menace rather than a clean resolution.

In the aftermath, even as the ritual offers relief, a chilling reminder remains: the threat may return. Alone with the truth, [Julie] reappears and hands [Sarah] the same pills Nick had been giving her, signaling that the struggle is far from over and that the demon may possess someone else in the house. The final image lingers on [Sarah]’s eye, leaving viewers with a haunting sense of vulnerability and the suggestion that the light she seeks to hold onto may flicker at any moment.
