What Happens at the End of The Christmas Chronicles 2?

How The Christmas Chronicles 2 (2020) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

At the end of The Christmas Chronicles 2, Santa and Kate are unexpectedly transported back to 1990, where they find themselves in a busy Boston airport. This twist reveals a heartfelt moment: Santa, with the help of music and the Christmas Spirit, allows Kate to reunite with her father, Doug, who had passed away. It’s a touching scene where Kate gets to say a final goodbye to her dad in person, which she had always wished for. As she spends this precious moment with him, Santa's actions imply that he is aware of Doug's identity and that their reunion is a gift of love and closure made possible by the magic of Christmas. After the encounter, Santa and Kate are returned to their original time, and Kate is left with a sense of peace about her father's passing.

Meanwhile, the film explores Belsnickel’s redemption arc. Although initially the villain who steals the Christmas star and causes chaos, Belsnickel's true feelings are rooted in a desire to be loved and appreciated. Through his interactions with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and especially after Santa gifts him his first handmade toy, Belsnickel begins to understand the importance of kindness and forgiveness. This leads to his change of heart, where he abandons his plan of war on Christmas and joins back with Santa, reaffirming the spirit of unity and love that defines the holiday. With Belsnickel redeemed, the North Pole community is restored, and Christmas is saved.

The ending also carries a bittersweet tone for Santa and Mrs. Claus. While Christmas is successfully restored and the village is back to normal, Mrs. Claus feels a sense of sadness from the absence of children in the North Pole for most of the year. She shows a nurturing side, caring for Kate and Jack, hinting she might have had children of her own or longs for a family of her own. As Kate embraces her new blended family—accepting Bob and finding peace with her dad's memory—she learns that love and family are about who you share your moments with, not just where you celebrate. Ultimately, the story emphasizes that the true meaning of Christmas lies in love, forgiveness, and the importance of family, whether near or far. Santa’s magical gift to Kate—the chance to say goodbye—embodies the spirit of hope and healing that the holiday season aims to inspire.
