Ivan-Durak, the youngest of three brothers, is sent into the night to guard a trampled field, a task given by an aging farmer who hopes to uncover the culprit. The elder brothers watch from afar, but it is the youngest who takes the dangerous duty. That night, Ivan chats with a hedgehog he once saved, and then spots the glimmer of a mare; he tosses a rope into a mist and is carried far across the fields. They plunge into a swamp, and he pulls the drowning mare from danger with the help of a waterwheel. The mare pleads for mercy, and, moved by compassion, Ivan frees her with a promise that she will no longer trample their fields. The next morning, back in the stable, he discovers two horses and meets a small Foal—the The Little Humpbacked Horse who says he was sent by his mother mare to help and support him. This mark begins a strange partnership that will shape Ivan’s fate.
Seeking money to secure his new companions, Ivan leads the horses to the bazaar. There, the King spots them, claims the horses as his own, and moves them into his stables, leaving Ivan with nothing but opportunity and a sense of growing danger. Undeterred, Ivan asks the Foal to assist him, and the magical horse responds with a whistle that calls the horses back. The King offers Ivan the position of the most important groom, a gift that should have cemented Ivan’s place, yet also foreshadows darker plots. As time passes, people grow to admire Ivan more and more, but the King’s suspicions and caprice begin to mount. The Sleeping Bag suggests a dangerous mission: fetch the Firebird, and use that act to justify punishment if Ivan fails. With the Foal at his side, Ivan sets out on a quest that will test his courage and change the kingdom’s balance of power.
Together they undertake the journey to find the Firebird, gathering dream-nuts along the way and discovering the bird’s shelter. The Firebird’s sleep is secured when a bird is chained, but Ivan recognizes that true power cannot be kept in chains. He releases the bird, and the Foal explains that the Firebird can shine only when free. When they return, the King orders Ivan’s execution for disobedience, claiming that the boy did not heed orders. Yet the Firebird appears just in time, and the execution is halted, revealing the power of mercy and a miraculous rescue that alters the course of the tale.
The King, increasingly hostile, orders Ivan to fetch the Tsar-maiden, a princess who dwells in an Ice country perched on a high rock. The princess awakens from a dream and confesses she does not wish to marry, choosing instead to leap into the abyss. Unhesitating, Ivan follows, and the Foal flies to safety as they are pulled back into the world above. The King desires an immediate union, but the princess insists on her grandmother’s ring, which lies far in the ocean. To avoid losing her, Ivan asks for a seemingly impossible assignment to win her hand. The King agrees with a smile, and Ivan and the Foal begin a journey along magical roads that will push them toward the ocean and beyond.
The Foal speaks with the Sun, Moon, and Wind to learn the ring’s whereabouts, and their path leads to the Whale, a vast creature once chained for swallowing ships. The Whale is reluctant but grateful, and Ivan persuades him to help by making him sneeze, freeing the ships from their ancient bondage. In return, the Whale sends a crab that returns the Tsar-maiden’s grandmother’s ring. With the ring in hand, Ivan returns to the girl in the tower and asks her to marry him, only to be confronted by the King’s guards who accuse him of attempting a kidnapping. The Foal is shot in the wing, and the King’s power seems unshakable—until the Tsar-maiden’s grandmother’s ring invites a new test of fate.
To win a lasting place by the princess’s side, a final trial unfolds. The Tsar-maiden explains that she cannot marry until a series of trials is endured, and the sleeping Night watches as three cauldrons are prepared: one with boiling water, one with ice water, and one with a mix of boiling milk. The Sleeping Bag advises testing the cauldrons on Ivan before the execution, and the princess explains the ritual that will decide who stays alive. In the first cauldron, the ring is thrown in and Ivan is carried out safely. In the second, the Firebird’s feather falls inside, yet Ivan remains unharmed. The Foal discovers the third cauldron holds a life-and-death flower that grows at the end of the world, and he plucks it to save John, despite a warning that this act could herald doom. The flower’s message reveals that the words were a test rather than a fate; had the Foal not plucked it, he would have died, but now he is granted life.
With the tests behind them, the renewed Ivan stands before the Tsar-maiden, ready to claim his future. The King, unmoved by loyalty or love, jumps into the first cauldron, and a great bubble erupts, casting the cursing ruler into the sky. The Foal awaits his own fate, but the Tsar-maiden reveals the flower’s meaning: it was a trial, and the outcome depends on courage and timing rather than chance. In the aftermath, the kingdom is left without a king, and Ivan becomes the people’s ruler at the princess’s side as his queen. The tale closes with a new era beginning, built on a blend of resilience, magic, and the willingness to risk everything for love and justice.
