The Bounty Hunter

A prologue explains the role of the bounty hunter. Burch tries to ambush Jim Kipp but is quickly bested. Kipp carries Burch's corpse into town to collect the reward.

A Pinkerton representative asks Kipp to hunt a trio of fugitives who robbed $100,000. They promise a huge reward for their capture dead or alive. Kipp heads toward Twin Forks to begin the search.

Kipp arrives in Twin Forks using an alias and seeks information about a fugitive's wounds from Dr. Spencer. He is immediately attracted to Dr. Spencer's daughter Julie. He keeps his true bounty-hunter purpose hidden.

A limping hotel worker named Bill Rachin and card dealer George Williams draw Kipp's suspicion. Williams's wife Alice flirts with him to glean information, while Kipp remains tight-lipped about his business.

Vance Edwards identifies Kipp and wrongly assumes he is pursuing him for a past crime. The townspeople grow anxious about the stranger's presence. Led by postmaster Danvers, they offer Kipp a bribe to leave town.

Kipp tells several townsfolk that he is expecting a stagecoach package containing a photograph of one robber. Dr. Spencer overhears the same plan and becomes worried about what may be revealed.

Spencer confronts Williams and demands a meeting with the robbers. Williams leads him to their poker game but shoots Spencer. Kipp pursues Williams, trying to force a confession, but Sheriff Brand shoots Williams dead just as he is about to reveal information.

Spencer is gravely wounded and taken back to his house. Danvers secretly tries to smother him with a pillow, but Julie discovers the attempt. Kipp hears Julie's screams, chases Danvers into the hills, and finds him dead beside an empty money box.

The stage arrives the next day with the mail. The sheriff deputizes Bill Rachin and plans to get rid of the bounty hunter.

Edwards rescues Kipp, grateful that the bounty hunter is not pursuing him. Kipp examines a mail pouch, studies the contents, and notes the sheriff's possible connection.

The sheriff reveals himself as one of the robbers when he confronts Kipp. Alice Williams shoots him in retaliation for her husband's death, claiming he deserved it. Julie wrestles with Alice for the gun while Kipp subdues her and searches her saddlebag for the stolen money.

Kipp marries Julie and becomes Twin Forks' sheriff, deciding to settle there. He recovers the stolen money from Alice's saddlebag and ensures the culprits are brought to justice.
