Brady Sutton, Phil Carey, a former member of the Hole in the Wall gang, longs to live an honest life. He returns to his hometown, Broken Bow, with his sweetheart, Nancy Warren, Martha Hyer, to start a blacksmith business.
At the bank, Brady spots a gang member casing the joint and promptly warns the local sheriff. The sheriff, Roy Roberts, schemes to move the town’s money to the jailhouse to foil a night raid, but the plan begins to fray as tension rises around the planned crime.
That night, Gene Evans as Butch Cassidy and the Hole in the Wall gang raid the jail. The assault ends badly: two gang members are killed, and Brady is implicated. He narrowly escapes town with the help of Charlie Veer, Douglas Kennedy, who hopes to join Cassidy’s crew.
Veer persuades Brady to guide him to Cassidy’s hideout, the gang’s notorious lair known as the Hole in the Wall. Some gang members want to lynch Brady, but Cassidy decides to bring him back into the fold. Veer reveals a plan to move the bank’s money by train the following night.
Cassidy hatches the train robbery, while Veer—later revealed as a Pinkerton agent—heads to the telegraph office to warn the sheriff. Cassidy, however, has already forced the telegraph operator to send a bogus message, and he kills the operator to seal the plot.
Brady, torn between crime and a chance at a ordinary life, wrestles with his conscience and attempts to stop the robbery. Veer acknowledges his Pinkerton allegiance and believes a posse still awaits on the train. The heist proceeds, but there is neither posse nor money aboard. Cassidy kills Veer and takes Nancy hostage.
Brady makes a desperate attempt to escape with Nancy, but they are recaptured by Cassidy. Believing the money remains at the bank in Broken Bow, Cassidy plans another raid. He manipulates Nancy into sending the sheriff off on a false trail, and she agrees in hopes of protecting Brady.
The raid unfolds with Nancy rallying the town’s women to resist. The plan falters: most of Cassidy’s gang are killed, Cassidy himself is captured, and Brady and Nancy are finally reunited.
