Musician Herb McGwyer, played by Tim Key, makes his way to the idyllic Wallis Island for a performance as one half of the once-popular folk duo McGwyer Mortimer. Upon his arrival, he is greeted by Charles—a somewhat quirky, enthusiastic fan who has organized the show for a crowd of “less than a hundred” people. Staying at Charles’ home, Herb is unexpectedly handed his impressive £500,000 fee in the form of a suitcase filled with cash. As their conversations unfold, he delicately navigates inquiries regarding his past professional and romantic split with his former collaborator, Nell Mortimer, portrayed by Carey Mulligan.
After a mishap with his waterlogged phone, Herb finds himself utilizing a payphone at the local store run by Amanda, played by Sian Clifford. Charles, revealing the improvised beach venue, admits he is essentially the only attendee. Having gained wealth through lottery winnings, Charles reminisces about traveling with his late wife, Marie—a devoted fan of McGwyer Mortimer—before settling on the island with more winnings. Herb, eyeing this performance as a way to fund his new album, later discovers that Nell and her American spouse, Michael, played by Akemnji Ndifornyen, have decided to show up.
With excitement bubbling over his reunion with McGwyer Mortimer, Charles is blissfully unaware of the brewing tensions. The relationship between Herb and Nell is complicated; while Herb’s solo career has veered towards the commercial, Nell has retreated from music to settle in Portland, Oregon, and learns that her payment for this gig is substantially less than Herb’s. Initially contemplating his departure the following morning, Herb finds himself staying after a heartfelt conversation with Michael, who reveals his financial struggles.
Among Charles’ collection of souvenirs is Herb’s old guitar and a counterfeit lock of Nell’s hair, leading to a series of rekindled moments between the two as they practice their past hits to bring joy to Charles. Tennis rounds between Herb and Charles yield delightful exchanges, as Charles encourages Herb to pursue his lingering connection with Nell, while Herb suggests that Charles ask out Amanda.
Spending a beautiful “Seaman’s Day” at the beach together, they partake in the whimsical tradition of writing wishes on sky lanterns and releasing them during sunset. As they continue to connect through music, Herb confesses his lingering love for Nell, only to be met with the shocking news of her pregnancy. This revelation ignites a confrontation over their past and dreams, causing Nell to leave behind a real lock of her hair when she departs, with Charles encouraging her to keep creating music.
Feeling betrayed and emotional, Herb lashes out at Charles and hastily packs his belongings, leaving in a storm. After leaving his bags with Amanda, who has grown familiar with his music through her son, he returns to the house. The following day, Michael arrives to collect the payment, but he chastises Herb about his pursuit of Nell and the state of his musical journey.
In a moment of despair, Herb swims to retrieve one of the lanterns, while Charles misconstrues the situation, believing Herb to be attempting self-harm. Quickly, he wades in to save Herb, only for the roles to reverse, as it is Herb who rescues Charles. Realizing his heartfelt motive was misguided, Charles—organizing the show in memory of Marie’s anniversary—grants Herb his fee regardless, allowing the lantern to carry his loving message for her. This poignant moment inspires Herb to extend an invitation to Amanda for the show on Charles’ behalf.
As they gather on the beach, Herb surprises everyone by delivering a heartfelt performance, dedicating the final song to Marie, honoring the spirit of love and memory. The following day, amidst farewells, Herb expresses gratitude to Charles, leaving behind the money along with a signed guitar that bears his real name—“Your biggest fan, Chris Pinner.” As the credits roll, a transformed Chris, shedding his stage persona, embarks on his next chapter by recording a new song, aptly named “The Ballad of Wallis Island.”
