The story opens with Lisa 'The Informer' Janusch narrating her perspective as the bitter head cheerleader of Lincoln High School's B-squad. She expresses her jealousy towards Diane 'The Mastermind' Weston, the popular head cheerleader of the A-squad, whom she believes has sabotaged her chances of being on the A-squad for four years.

Jack, the new star football quarterback and a recent transfer to the school, quickly captures the attention of students, including Lisa. His charm and popularity lead to him being elected Homecoming King, a title that only adds to his allure as he expresses his ambition to become a senator.

As Homecoming approaches, Jack chooses Diane to accompany him to the dance, sparking a close relationship between the two. They bond quickly, culminating in a romantic moment at the Homecoming game where Jack scores a last-minute touchdown, solidifying their status as a couple.

Following their whirlwind romance, Diane discovers she is pregnant with Jack's child. The couple decides to get married and announces the pregnancy to their parents, facing immediate backlash as both sets of parents kick them out of their homes.

Jack and Diane move out to find an apartment, but quickly learn that their lack of income makes securing a loan impossible. Jack struggles to maintain a job initially but eventually finds work at a video rental store while they navigate the challenges of being young parents.

With their monthly expenses exceeding their income, Jack and Diane face significant financial strain. They attempt to balance school and their new responsibilities while adjusting to their new lifestyle, which is complicated by their lack of money for rent and living expenses.

As Diane's rival, Lisa encounters Jack at the rental store and finds herself drawn to him, although her attempts to win his affection prove unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the school's perception of Jack and Diane is that they are living the dream life, but the reality is far from perfect.

Faced with financial woes, Diane and her cheerleading squad, including Kansas, Cleo, Lucy, and Hannah, come up with a plan to rob a bank to secure the money they need. Believing this is their quickest route to a better life, they commit to the heist without informing Jack.

The squad watches heist films to strategize for the robbery and seeks guidance from Kansas' incarcerated mother to procure weapons. They meet with a bug exterminator who can supply firearms but requires that his daughter be included in their cheer squad, leading to further complications.

During their first robbery attempt at a supermarket, the cheer squad puts their plan into action and uses their cheerleading skills to distract security cameras. However, things take a serious turn when one of the guns accidentally discharges, heightening the tension of the already risky heist.

The squad successfully robs the bank and celebrates their newfound wealth, but their success is short-lived as Lisa witnesses their antics during the heist. This event marks a turning point as Lisa now possesses information that could threaten their future.

In the cafeteria, Lisa confronts Diane and her squad about their involvement in the robbery. The situation escalates as the FBI gets involved, leading to the arrest of Diane and her friends, forcing them to confront the consequences of their actions.

While in jail, Diane strikes a deal with Lisa to promote her to captain of the A-squad in exchange for silence about the robbery. This agreement reveals the lengths Diane is willing to go to preserve her future even as tensions rise within the cheerleading group.

After serving time, Diane tells Jack a white lie about winning the lottery to explain their situation. As they navigate their new lives post-high school, Jack wins his campaign for senate, while Diane and her squad start to lead successful lives.
