Sohni Mahiwal (1984) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sohni Mahiwal (1984), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In Punjab, a wealthy trader named Mirza Izzat Beg, Sunny Deol, arrives with his caravan from Bukhara and halts in a riverside town along the Chenab. There he meets Sohni, Poonam Dhillon, the beautiful daughter of a potter named Tulla, Pran Sikand, who runs a small pottery workshop. Sohni tends a shop where she sells her family’s pottery, and the encounter sparks an immediate attraction: Izzat Beg is drawn to her grace and starts buying pots and mugs every day simply to be near her. The romance unfolds against a backdrop of tradition and social norms that view such a union as impossible: a potter’s daughter with an outsider. To stay close, Izzat Beg chooses to stay behind rather than return to Bukhara, taking on the role of a servant in Tulla’s house and helping with the buffaloes, earning the nickname Mahiwal — the buffalo herder.

Their love invites gossip and condemnation from the community. Sohni’s parents, unable to accept the match, arrange her marriage to another potter, moving her away from the river town. Grief-stricken but resolute, the lovers continue their bond in secret. Mahiwal moves to a hut he builds on the opposite bank of the Chenab river, directly across from Sohni’s new home. Each night, under the cover of darkness, he makes the perilous journey to the riverside to meet her. Sohni, resourceful and fearless, uses a sturdy, hard-baked earthenware pot as a makeshift boat, swimming across the dangerous currents to join him. Their clandestine meetings are filled with tenderness and devotion, a testament to love resisting social boundaries.

A story-told detail says that, on one occasion, when Mahiwal cannot catch a fish for Sohni, he harvests a dramatic gesture by cutting a piece of flesh from his own thigh to roast for her. This act of sacrifice deepens Sohni’s devotion and cements their bond in the eyes of their families, even as the rumors and jealousies grow louder.

The truth eventually reaches Sohni’s family, who feel anger and a desire to end the affair. Her sister-in-law, driven by malice, follows Sohni and intercepts the location of her nightly meetings. She replaces the hard-baked pot with a seemingly identical unbaked one. That night, Sohni again attempts the crossing with the unbaked pot, which dissolves in the river. Caught in the treacherous current, Sohni begins to drown. From the far bank, Mahiwal spots her distress, leaps into the Chenab, and fights the river to save her. The river claims both lovers, but in death they are reunited, their story echoing through the town as a legend of love and tragedy.
