Arthur, a corporate attorney, and Eve, an interior decorator, are the parents of three adult daughters. The eldest, Renata, is a gifted poet whose rising success casts a shadow over the family, while her husband Frederick, a struggling writer, feels eclipsed by her accomplishments. The youngest, Flyn, is an actress who is away filming much of the time, and the quality of her projects becomes a running joke behind her back. In between them stands Joey, the middle sister, who is in a relationship with Mike and struggles to choose a path for herself; she resents her mother for what she perceives as favoritism toward Renata, while Renata resents their father’s constant attention to Joey’s lack of direction.
One morning, a shock ripples through the household when Arthur unexpectedly announces that he wants a separation and longs to live on his own. The other half of the family grapples with the news as Eve, who already wrestles with clinical depression, suffers a severe blow and attempts to take her own life in her new Manhattan apartment. The double upheaval taxes the sisters’ loyalties and exposes fissures that had been quietly open for years. The family’s sense of stability is further unsettled when Arthur returns from a trip to Greece with Pearl, a high-spirited, more “normal” woman whom he intends to marry. The revelation unsettles the sisters even more because Arthur’s actions seem to dismiss Eve’s suicide attempt and because Pearl represents a new chapter for him that feels to them like a betrayal of the mother they lost.
The marriage to Pearl takes place at the family’s Long Island beach house, a setting that gathers Renata, Joey, and Flyn among those who are closest to Eve’s memory and to the life they once shared. The ceremony is followed by tensions that flare in small ways: Joey lashes out when Pearl accidentally breaks one of Eve’s vases, a moment that underscores the fragility of the siblings’ patience and the mixed feelings they harbor about their parents’ choices. The night also reveals a harsher truth about the tensions within the home: in a secluded garage, Flyn uses cocaine, and Frederick, in a moment of drunkenness, makes an attempt that could have harmed her. She escapes, but the incident adds another layer of danger and fear to the family dynamics.
Amid the chaos, Joey seeks solace in explaining to Eve how much she has sacrificed for her mother, and the reply is a painful blend of honesty and hurt. Eve, overwhelmed by the constellation of losses and disappointments, walks out onto the beach and into the surf, a moment that becomes pivotal for the sisters’ bond. Joey’s attempt to save Eve ends in tragedy as she nearly drowns. Mike intervenes to pull Joey from the water, while Pearl acts quickly to resuscitate Eve, tilting her head back and performing rescue breaths to clear the airway. The immediate danger passes, and the family is left to confront the consequences of the earlier upheavals and the fragility of their connections.
The story culminates at Eve’s funeral, a quiet, intimate ceremony in which each sister places a single white rose—Eve’s favorite flower and a symbol of hope—on her wooden coffin. After the service, the three sisters stand together at the edge of the sea, gazing out toward the horizon from the now-familiar beach house. The calm expanse of the water offers a lingering sense of peace, a counterpoint to the tumult they endured, and a quiet invitation to reflect on the enduring, if imperfect, ties that bind them.
This narrative explores how ambition, love, loss, and memory intersect within a family, revealing how fragile yet resilient kinship can be when faced with sudden separation, a crisis of mental health, and the unpredictable turns of life.
