Sneham Kosam (1999) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sneham Kosam (1999), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

In a quiet village, Chinnayya works as a loyal laborer for a wealthy landowner, Peddayya, and the bond between them feels like father and son, marked by mutual respect and affection. Peddayya, while protective and generous toward Chinnayya, harbors a strong dislike for his elder daughter, Gowri, and her husband, Peddabbayi, whom he sees as trouble in the family’s life. The story widens with the arrival of Peddayya’s younger daughter, Prabhavathy, who returns from the United States after completing her education and quietly brings a new energy to the household. Prabhavathy’s heart softens for Chinnayya, and she openly admires him, yet Chinnayya keeps his distance at first, worried that pursuing her could betray the trust Peddayya has placed in him. Over time, though, Chinnayya comes to recognize her sincere love and accepts it, allowing their bond to deepen amid the village’s gaze.

Tension erupts when Prabhavathy accuses Chinnayya of a grave and shocking act—an attempt to rape her. Peddayya’s anger flares, and he drives Chinnayya out of the house, severing the fragile peace that had existed. At this stormy moment, Simhadri, Chinnayya’s father, who had spent years away in jail, returns to the scene seeking his own place in Peddayya’s world. Simhadri’s arrival intensifies the already strained dynamics, because Prabhavathy harbors past memories of Simhadri’s imprisonment for the murder of Lakshmi, Peddayya’s wife, a crime that has haunted the family for years. Prabhavathy’s accusations against Simhadri color her view of him, and she even urges him to leave, fearing that his presence could destabilize the fragile balance in Peddayya’s house. Peddayya, torn between the words of his daughter and the loyalty he once felt for Simhadri, finds his trust unsettled, and the truth behind Lakshmi’s death begins to unfold.

As the narrative moves into a flashback, the real history behind Lakshmi’s death is laid bare. Simhadri was once a loyal servant in Peddayya’s home, and Peddabbayi, Lakshmi’s younger brother, had his wedding to Gowri arranged. Lakshmi discovers Peddabbayi’s plan to rob Peddayya’s wealth and tries to stop the marriage, but Peddabbayi injures her and the wedding proceeds regardless. Simhadri, upon uncovering the full truth, faces a grave dilemma: he decides not to let Gowri’s life be crushed by the repercussions, so he takes the blame and is arrested for Lakshmi’s death. This act poisons Gowri’s and Prabhavathy’s memories of him, fueling their hatred toward Simhadri and his family. Peddayya, however, refuses to accept this version of events without seeing the truth for himself, and he goes to the jail to confront Simhadri. Simhadri reveals everything to him and begs that the truth remain between them, so Gowri would not be left alone with the weight of the reality. Peddayya agrees to keep the secret but, in the process, pushes Peddabbayi out of his home and causes Gowri to depart without the full clarity of what happened. The stage is now set for a reckoning that will reach across generations.

Back in the present, a new wedding is planned between Prabhavathy and Peddabbayi’s younger brother, Chinnababu, as the family tries to map out a path forward. On the eve of this ceremony, Gowri finally learns the truth about Lakshmi’s death and chooses to reveal it to everyone, sparking a storm of anger and confrontation. Peddabbayi, furious at the exposure, attempts to kill Gowri, but Simhadri emerges to intervene; he is fatally stabbed in the course of protecting Gowri and the truth. In the ensuing chaos, Peddabbayi is killed by Chinnababu after the revelation that Lakshmi’s death was the result of Peddabbayi’s actions. Peddayya is left beside the bodies of Simhadri and the consequences of years of buried secrets, and his sorrow deepens until he dies as well, a broken man overwhelmed by the losses around him. The film closes on a note of fragile reconciliation as Chinnayya and Prabhavathy stand together, their marriage tying together the torn family they have fought to heal.
