Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

At the end of “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” all four characters—Spencer, Martha, Bethany, and Fridge—manage to return safely to the real world after their adventure in the game. Their journey concludes with the understanding that they have grown and learned more about themselves through their experiences in Jumanji. However, there was a point during filming where the ending could have been quite different. Originally, the filmmakers considered a darker ending where Spencer, whose avatar is played by Dwayne Johnson, and Martha, whose avatar is Ruby Roundhouse played by Karen Gillan, would choose to stay within the game world rather than return home. This alternate ending was meant to leave the door open for a possible sequel by showing the characters emotionally connected to Jumanji and reluctant to leave.

In fact, during production, there was a scene where Spencer and Martha kiss, and as the drums signal Jumanji’s call, the idea was that the game could have been re-downloaded onto their phones, leading to the risk of them being pulled back into the game at any moment. This darker ending implied that their adventure might not truly be over, and that they could be re-sucked into the game without a clear resolution. Ultimately, though, the filmmakers opted for a more conclusive ending: they destroy the video game and console to prevent anyone from being drawn into Jumanji again.

This ending is satisfying because it signifies that the characters have matured and are ready to face real life. Still, there’s a hint of how close things came to a different fate, and with the film’s success, there’s talk among the cast and creators about potential future sequels—possibly involving the game or its universe expanding into new formats like mobile games, keeping the adventure alive in new forms. But for now, the story closes with the characters safe back in the real world, having completed their transformative journey.
