Slumdog Millionaire

In 2006, eighteen-year-old Jamal Malik, a young Indian Muslim from the slums of Mumbai, becomes a contestant on the game show Kaun Banega Crorepati. His journey begins as he prepares to answer the life-changing final question worth Rs 20 million.

Moments before his final answer, Jamal finds himself interrogated by police constable Srinivas. The constable suspects foul play and resorts to extreme measures, including torture, to extract a confession from Jamal, questioning his potential to succeed in the game.

As he faces the interrogation, Jamal reflects on his childhood experiences that led him to his answers. One pivotal moment occurs at the age of five when he jumps into a cesspit to obtain an autograph from his idol, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

During a time of unrest, tragedy hits Jamal and his brother Salim when their mother is killed in the Bombay riots. This loss forces the brothers to confront harsh realities and search for safety amid the chaos surrounding them.

While seeking refuge from a rainstorm, Jamal and Salim meet Latika, a girl from their slum. Hesitantly, Salim decides to let her join their group, marking the beginning of their friendship as they refer to themselves as the 'three musketeers.'

The trio's innocence is shattered when they fall into the hands of Maman, a gangster who exploits street children. Jamal and Salim experience the brutality of being forced into begging, a grim fate that they desperately seek to escape from.

After enduring the harsh life under Maman, the brothers manage to escape but face a heartbreaking decision. They are forced to leave Latika behind, marking a significant point of separation in their lives and a loss of their childhood bond.

As the years pass, Jamal and Salim find ways to survive amidst poverty through petty crimes and street tricks. Their life consists of pickpocketing and pretending to be tour guides, showcasing their resilience and resourcefulness.

Determined to reunite with Latika, Jamal returns to Mumbai only to discover her entangled in a web of crime and being groomed for prostitution. This revelation solidifies his resolve to rescue her from her grim situation.

In a tense confrontation, Jamal faces his brother Salim, who is now involved with a dangerous crime lord, Javed. Salim's betrayal leaves Jamal heartbroken, as familial loyalty is tested in their struggle for survival.

Years later, Jamal works as a Chaiwallah in a call center, unknowingly on the verge of crossing paths with his past. His knowledge of British pop culture aids him in finding Salim, who is now Javed's lieutenant, revealing a twist of fate.

Drawing on his past and his love for Latika, Jamal becomes a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati. His determination to win not only becomes a path to wealth but also a way to reach Latika, who watches the show eagerly.
