Grieves is sent ahead to scout and gauge the vampire threat. Weaver also reveals that Laurie Williams, Hawk's ex-wife and a university entomologist, is on a field expedition in the same vicinity and must be kept safe.

Laurie befriends a local boy; Javier invites her to stay

Laurie and her guide encounter a local boy threatening a man with a wooden stake. Laurie pretends to be an ignorant tourist to distract the boy while the man escapes.
