A routine flight into a dense, uncharted jungle ends in disaster when a plane crash leaves the front section and the cockpit missing. The surviving passengers are forced to improvise, with the most immediate goal being to reach the cockpit and radio for help. Among the group, Ed Malone discovers a distant cockpit about a mile away and a decision is made to split up: some will press on toward the radio, while others stay behind to keep watch for any passing aircraft.

As the expedition advances, the team discovers a disturbing clue: the fuselage they reach does not belong to the wreck they survived, and the radio equipment and vital instruments have already been stripped away. The mood tightens with the unexpected arrival of Lieutenant Colonel Challenger, a lone traveler who carries a mysterious briefcase and a wary demeanor. His presence unsettles the group, yet he becomes part of the effort to reach help.

The search for the cockpit continues, with peril mounting as some members are killed or simply vanish in the hostile terrain. The party happens upon a second, military plane, which raises the stakes and the tension. Challenger attempts to rig a missile as a signal gun, but the makeshift plan fails. That night, the team hunkers down in a cavern to ride out the dangerous environment, only to be ambushed by giant prehistoric scorpions known as Brontoscorpio. The attack proves deadly: John and Tianka lose their lives, while Ed, Challenger, Rita, Dana, and Natalie narrowly escape for safety along a swollen stream.

Their ordeal deepens when they are captured by natives living high on a plateau. These inhabitants have learned to strip passing planes for parts and are revealed to be long-term survivors of previous crashes who have developed a chilling sacrificial rite to appease the jungle’s fearsome creatures. Dana and Natalie are drawn into the cult’s routine, while Ed is singled out as the chosen sacrifice.

Yet the ritual falters when a colossal ape called Gigantopithecus crashes the ceremony and a swarm of flying dragon-like lizards descends in a violent frenzy. Dana, who pretended to be brainwashed, seizes a chance to help Ed, and the unlikely pair reunites with Challenger and Rita. They glimpse military jets overhead, signaling an assault on the ape, but the jets themselves are obliterated in a catastrophic strike, taking the hope of rescue with them. Challenger fights a native in a desperate struggle and dies amid the ape’s rampage, leaving Ed to face the threat alone.

In a final, desperate gambit, Ed takes control of a crashed plane and detonates a nuclear device to wipe out the giant ape. The explosion succeeds in killing the creature but also destroys the cockpit, sealing Ed, Rita, and Dana inside the jungle’s labyrinth. Facing a grim fate, they contemplate extinction, until Ed’s terse, defiant line cuts through the air: > Not today. The blast’s fallout leaves one of the flying lizards still alive, a stubborn reminder that survival in this untamed world remains imperfect, warping the line between life and myth as the jungle reclaims the ruins of human effort.
