The disappearance of Jim Wheatley while exploring the legendary Cave of the Dead pulls his sister Gina Matthews and her husband Dan Matthews toward the phrase they call the shores of the Caribbean. Before they depart, a pre-expedition party brings in uninvited Pete Morgan, who has a complicated past with Gina and Dan, a past that made him a rival in love but also a survivor in danger. Pete’s presence, his limp, and his stubborn determination to join the expedition push Dan to invite him along on the search for answers about the cave and the fate of Jim Wheatley.
The voyage is sparked by a mysterious muse: Sir Lancelot, the King of the Calypso, performs a song whose cryptic lyrics seem to point toward the Cave of the Dead. Dan believes the tune encodes a map or a warning, and he seeks meaning from Raoul Koom, a local with a village near the cave. Raoul Koom refuses to interpret the song, warning that some truths are better left unsaid, but Dan, Gina, Pete, and Raoul press on toward the cave anyway. When they reach Raoul’s village, they meet a people who deny the cave’s existence, a denial that only deepens the mystery and tests the travelers’ resolve.
In the village, they visit the home of Ramsey, the so-called Americano doctor, who is consumed with his research into fungi, bacteria, and slime molds. He keeps a harsh household, with his wife Concha treated as a servant. Concha’s quiet fear and her sympathy for the group contrast with Ramsey’s volatile temper, especially when she accidentally drops a jar of fruit that reveals fungus growing on his product. The strange fruit becomes a thread that ties Ramsey’s experiments to the cave itself, and Gina notes the fruit’s odd fungal growth as a clue that something otherworldly is unfolding.
As Concha leads Dan and Pete toward a place where they can hear faint voices—the voices of the dead crying from beneath the earth—the danger in the jungle becomes palpable. A foamy, fungus-covered man-monster suddenly erupts, chasing Gina into the trees. She is saved only when two passersby dispatch the creature, a brutal reminder that the cave’s secrets live in a world of danger.
With a hired guide, Lino—who works for Ramsey—Dan and Pete press deeper into the cave. Inside, they encounter skeletons and the dead body of Raoul Koom, a grim sign of the perils that await. A sudden storm floods the cave, trapping Dan while Pete makes a perilous escape. When the storm eases, Gina and Pete return, again guided by Lino, and the trio faces a deadly trap: Lino triggers a dynamite charge to seal their path, but the blast also triggers a rockslide that claims his life.
Inside the cave, the trio discovers walls thick with a parasitic fungus—the same substance that coats Ramsey’s fruit. They find Dan, his back broken, warning them of the fungus-infested monster-men that roam the cave. The beasts lunge, but Pete fights them off with a flaming torch as the fungus begins to slide down the cave walls in thick blobs, turning the environment into a living hazard.
Pete discovers a shaft that leads to Ramsey’s house, and he climbs up to fetch help. He learns that Ramsey himself has created the monstrous fungus and that the scientist’s fear of releasing it into the world has become a terrifying obsession. Ramsey refuses to assist until Pete explains that the fungus, once trapped by fresh air, is now growing anew and could threaten everything. Ramsey’s insistence—“We can seal it in the cave! Otherwise it’ll destroy the world!”—carries a dangerous urgency. Pete yanks the scientist into the cave, and Concha detonates explosives to collapse the shaft, trying to contain the outbreak. Ramsey is killed, consumed by his own fungus, and Dan dies from his injuries in the struggle.
With the cave collapsing around them, Pete and Gina don diving gear and swim toward safety, escaping the nightmare after a final, perilous trek. They emerge on a pristine tropical beach, the dangers behind them, yet the memory of the cave’s deadly fungus and the sacrifices made by those who sought to uncover it remains, a stark reminder that curiosity can lead to both discovery and ruin, even on the most beautiful shores.
