Kay is an abstract visual artist, portrayed by Sarah Kendall, whose childhood dreams have haunted her for years. The visions shift in frequency and content: some are just glimpses of desolate places that leave her with a creeping dread, while others reveal the brutal deaths of friends and loved ones at the hands of a supernatural force. Lately, the dreams have grown harsher and more persistent, nudging her art toward a new, unsettling intensity. To help her cope and protect her fragile sense of stability, Kay’s family and friends plan a vacation to a small island off the coast of Georgia, hoping the change of scene will steady her nerves. Accompanying Kay are her husband, David; Kay’s brother, Eric, who introduced her to David; and Eric’s wife, Brooke. The trip promises rest, but the island will prove to be anything but peaceful.
As their plane nears the island, their pilot, Marsh, delivers troubling news: a hurricane has shifted course toward their location, forcing him to depart quickly so he won’t be stranded. The party lands to a landscape that feels eerily abandoned: deserted beaches, shuttered resorts, and buildings left to rot. Kay insists that the island is the place she has dreamed of since childhood, and that staying puts them all in danger. The others try to reassure her, but the mounting storm outside makes escape seem impossible, and the sense of imminent menace only grows louder as night falls.
What follows is a nightmare stepping into daylight. An unseen force begins to claim the group one by one. The first casualty is Kay’s husband, and she dreams of waking beside his severed head. When the morning comes, David’s decapitated body is found hanging in an abandoned playhouse, jolting the others into a fraying reality where Kay’s nightmare seems to be bleeding into the waking world. Eric suspects that Marsh never left the island and may be targeting them, a theory that gains some credence when Marsh himself is discovered to be on the island. Kay’s conviction deepens: the island has allowed her dreams to cross into reality, and the creature from her nightmares is somehow real, preying on them only while she sleeps.
The tension deepens as Kay uncovers a troubling snippet of family memory. In a whispered recounting, Eric shares that Kay once received a black kitten for Christmas, only for the animal to be found frozen to death in the family freezer days later. Kay blames the creature from her nightmares for the cat’s death, a memory that now seems to foreshadow the violent events unfolding on the island. The link between dream and waking terror becomes clearer: the nightmares appear to be more than fiction, and the danger follows Kay wherever she dreams.
Night turns into a deadly sequence of assaults. Eric is violently murdered on the beach while trying to retrieve flares, his body dragged into the ocean. Brooke is then attacked in the boathouse and impaled with a pitchfork. The group, diminished and frightened, barricades themselves in the beach house, fighting to stay awake by drinking coffee and smoking to keep the sleep at bay. Kay, armed with a flare gun, confronts Marsh as he attempts to enter the house and ends his threat with a fatal shot, setting the dwelling aflame in the process. In the midst of the chaos, a flaming, skeletal creature appears at the front door, looming over Kay as she prepares to flee.
The film then cuts to a jolting echo from the past: Kay, as a child, is awakened on Christmas morning by her parents after a nightmare. Her father presents her with a black kitten, and the sight unsettles her. As her older brother Eric steps into the room, the camera lingers on the kitten, tying this memory to the earlier tragedy and underscoring the sense that Kay’s nightmares have always carried a chilling, almost prophetic weight. The final image makes it clear that the nightmare was not merely a bad dream but a premonition of the real horror that would unfold—and that the fragility of Kay’s waking life and the boundaries between dream and reality have always been more precarious than anyone understood.
