Hidden in America

Bill, a widowed father, struggles to hold his family together with his two children, Willa and Robbie. After 17 years as a welder at General Motors, a robot takes over his job, and the family faces a tighter, more uncertain future.

Willa’s coughing fits and headaches signal malnutrition, sending them to their neighbor and doctor, Michael Millerton, who explains that Willa’s immune system is weakening from iron deficiency and that even short periods without proper nutrition can have lasting consequences.

Over time, the two families grow closer. The Millertons help in practical ways, offering money and food, and the Janusons begin to lean on their support as they navigate hardship together.

Robbie starts skipping school to earn money, first helping people load groceries and then sorting through cans and bottles in the park. He befriends a female mechanic, Gus, and they decide to team up to fix an old car with the aim of selling it.

After trying to find steadier work, Bill goes to apply for food stamps but learns the earliest assistance won’t arrive for five days. Desperation pushes him to join a construction site, where he is hired for the day.

Gus tells Robbie the car needs a new carburetor. Robbie steals Bill’s rent money to buy the part. The next day, Gus learns there is a buyer willing to pay $1,855 for the car and she’s ready to split it with him because of all his help. A coworker borrows the car and ends up in an accident, dashed hopes turning darker.

Overwhelmed, Robbie attempts to end his life by hanging himself in the shower. At the hospital, he confesses to his father about the theft, and Bill is grateful his son is alive, even as worry about their future lingers. The film closes on a cautious but hopeful note as the Millerton and Januson families come together to visit.
