Charlotte Salomon [Keira Knightley] is a young artist whose life unfolds against the mounting menace of a Germany increasingly hostile to Jewish citizens. In 1935 Berlin, a family outing to the opera is interrupted when members of the Nazi party push through the crowd, attempting to expel Jewish attendees. As tensions rise, Charlotte’s mother’s side of the family hopes for safety, while her father Albert and stepmother Paula choose to stay, clinging to the belief that life can continue in Germany. In a moment of quiet defiance, Charlotte sketches a vivid scene: the conductor ordering the Nazis to depart, a small act of rebellion that foreshadows the storms to come.

During a visit to her grandparents, Charlotte meets Ottilie Moore, an American woman who becomes a lifeline for the family. Ottilie offers refuge at her home on the Côte d’Azur, a sanctuary that stands in stark contrast to the growing danger in Germany. Despite her parents’ wishes that she become a seamstress, Charlotte earns a place at the Academy of Fine Arts, where she begins to shape an expressionist style that allows her to give form to emotional truths she cannot voice aloud. The studio becomes both a refuge and a battlefield, as Charlotte learns to translate pain, longing, and fear into paint.

Charlotte’s artistic journey deepens as she befriends and then grows close to Alfred Wolfsohn [Mark Strong], a vocal teacher who becomes a mentor and confidant. He comforts her after her expulsion from the academy and asks her to illustrate his wartime memoirs, inviting her to spend a day with him in Wannsee. Yet that day ends with a hard truth: Alfred has a fiancée, complicating the emotional landscape Charlotte is navigating. The emotional tension is soon overshadowed by the eruption of Kristallnacht, when Charlotte’s works are burned and Jewish residents are rounded up—an echo of the broader catastrophe engulfing her world.

Back home, Albert Salomon [Eddie Marsan] endures imprisonment in Sachsenhausen, returning months later with scars and a new urgency. With the family’s safety as a priority, Albert and Paula secure an exit visa for Charlotte by claiming her grandparents are ill, and Charlotte is sent to live in France with Ottilie and the grandparents. In the French exile, Charlotte’s grandmother’s mental health spirals, a reminder of the fragility threaded through her family history. There, Charlotte’s heart leans toward a gardener named Alexander Nagler, with whom she shares a forbidden, slow-burning romance. After her grandfather decides to move the trio to Nice, tragedy deepens: Charlotte’s grandmother commits suicide, and her grandfather reveals a devastating truth—that Charlotte’s mother and aunt took their own lives years earlier.

Amid these revelations, Charlotte returns to Ottilie’s care and confides in Alexander about the family’s legacy of illness and the desperate need to paint her life as honestly as she can. Six weeks into this project, Ottilie must take the young refugees to America, offering Charlotte and Alexander a chance to accompany her. Charlotte, however, remains in Nice because her visa hinges on staying with her increasingly abusive grandfather. In a final, desperate act, she poisons him with Veronal, an act that seals her fate in a world already tearing at the seams of her heart.

Now carrying a child with Alexander, Charlotte’s life remains perilously tethered to the man who has chosen to reveal his Jewish identity in order to marry her. Alexander’s courage comes at a price, but his honesty binds them together in a quiet, hidden defiance. As their relationship deepens, Charlotte entrusts her vast collection of paintings, which she titles Life? Or Theatre?, to Dr. Moridis [Henry Czerny], a village doctor entrusted with safeguarding these works. In a brutal reversal of their fragile hopes, Nazi forces soon seize them and carry them away, silencing their voices.

The film closes with a stark, sobering epilogue: Charlotte and Alexander are killed in Auschwitz, their lives cut short by the machinery of hatred. Interwoven with this tragedy are glimpses of Life? Or Theatre?, the visual diary Charlotte created from adolescence through exile. The paintings become a thread that ties the Salomon family to their history, to Ottilie’s journey, and to the memory of a generation undone by persecution. Across the screen, images flicker with quiet resonance, reminding us that art can preserve memory when life itself cannot.
