Caspian and other refugees burned the infected corpses out of fear and panic, believing it would prevent the virus from spreading further on the island. The group divided because they had conflicting priorities after reaching the mainland. Caspian's faction focused on practical survival needs, finding supplies and reaching what they believed was an evacuation point. Their differing approaches to survival ultimately led them to separate paths.

The evacuation point that Caspian's faction had been counting on had already fallen to the zombie horde by the time they arrived. This discovery crushed their hopes of escaping the city through organized evacuation and forced them to confront the reality that no safe exit existed. The fall of the evacuation point pushed the group toward desperation and contributed to Ashley's suicide.

Ashley was overwhelmed by the emotional toll of the zombie apocalypse, including the loss of hope after the evacuation point fell and the constant loss of survivors around her. She chose to end her own life by steering a trolley into a bus, becoming another victim of the crisis beyond the infected. Her death underscored the psychological devastation the outbreak was causing alongside the physical threat.

Dr. Arnold developed a vaccine derived from rigorous animal testing that showed promise against the water-borne virus. When Kyle and Marshall were attacked by zombies on the roof during the extraction, the vaccine proved effective in protecting them from infection. This success reinforced Arnold's belief that a cure could be manufactured, offering genuine hope for the future.

The virus originated at a water treatment facility in San Francisco, which served as the outbreak's ground zero. Dr. Arnold had been working secretly at this facility, and it was eventually revealed as both the source of the infection and his location while developing a potential cure. The survivors discovered this connection when they reached Arnold's hidden refuge.

The survivors chose Alcatraz Island as a refuge because it offered natural isolation from the zombie horde spreading across San Francisco. The old prison provided a defensible position with limited access points, making it easier to protect against attacks. Dr. Lynn Snyder coordinated the response from the island, treating it as a temporary stronghold while they searched for a longer-term solution.

Julie, Dr. Halpern's daughter, was wounded and infected during the massive zombie wave that crashed ashore at Alcatraz. Her infection created a devastating situation for her father, who later had to face the consequences when she turned. When she bit him as a zombie, Halpern was forced to kill himself with a grenade, ending both their lives in the process.

The earlier attack that infected Julie establishes the personal stakes for Dr. Halpern and sets up his eventual sacrifice.

Dr. Lynn Snyder maintained faith in Dr. Arnold because he represented the only real hope for a scientific solution to the outbreak. Despite setbacks and uncertainty, Arnold consistently promised progress and stayed in contact from his hidden facility.
