What Happens in Forbidden World: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Forbidden World (1982) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Inside a traveling spacecraft, a robot pilot named SAM-104 is at the controls as he approaches Mike Colby, who is encapsulated, unconscious, in a glass chamber resembling hibernation stasis. Once Mike awakens, the robot alerts him that their ship is under siege. With quick reflexes, Mike teams up with SAM-104 to fend off the attackers by firing missiles. Shortly thereafter, the robot informs him that the Federation has extended Mike's mission, redirecting their course to the planet Xarbia for the purpose of repairing a security lab. They leap into hyperspace, arriving at the surface of Xarbia, a desolate planet illuminated by two orbiting suns.

Upon arrival, Mike meets Dr. Gordon Hauser and Dr. Barbara Glaser. He proceeds to disable SAM-104's controls, allowing for free engagement. The doctors reveal their work in bacteriological genetic engineering and the successful creation of a new food source. As Mike encounters crew member Tracy Baxter, Gordon instructs her to locate their missing colleague, Jimmy Swift, and escort him to the lab. Within this lab, Mike meets Dr. Cal Tinburgen, the head of bacteriology, and is taken aback by the disarray of bloody rabbit carcasses littering the floor. The scientists explain that the chaos was caused by an octopus-like creature referred to as "Subject 20," which possesses the unique ability to constantly alter its genetic structure. Mike proposes that they should eliminate the creature, but Barbara persuades him to hold off for the moment.

As Tracy joins Mike and the others, including crew members Earl Richards and Brian Beale, for dinner, Jimmy, who is busy cleaning the lab, notes an increase in the creature's breathing. Gordon reassures Jimmy over the intercom that this is expected behavior but still sends Tracy back to check on the situation. Suddenly, a slimy, black blob surges forth from Subject 20 and assaults Jimmy. Meanwhile, the doctors elaborate on their experiments involving a genetically spliced substance known as Proto-B combined with rapid-growing algae. When Mike inquires about what was spliced with Proto-B to bring about Subject 20, Barbara cryptically refers to a deceased crew member named Annie but offers no further details. A distress signal soon interrupts their conversation: Tracy has discovered Jimmy’s body in the lab, his brain missing yet his heart still beating. As Cal carries the corpse into the medical bay, Barbara expresses her sympathies to Tracy.

That evening, Earl observes the security footage that captures Barbara and Mike in a passionate encounter before spotting an alarm alert. He descends into a dark corridor, only to find himself confronted by the creature. Meanwhile, Cal administers medication to himself while witnessing the horrific transformation of Jimmy's skin and muscles into a gelatinous substance.

The following morning, Mike unexpectedly finds Tracy in the shower, completely unguarded. Just as he disrobes, the creature strikes, but they narrowly escape. The monster crashes through the sauna skylight, prompting Mike to declare that he, Gordon, Brian, and SAM-104 will pursue it outside. The team dons protective spacesuits as Gordon warns them of the impending atmospheric danger that will cause nitrogen in their blood to froth. Back in the lab, Barbara and Cal observe as the gelatinous mass splits into two.

On the arid surface of Xarbia, Brian stumbles upon Earl's decomposing body near the mutant's recent cocoon. As the men fire laser shots at the sac, they discover it has been vacated. Near their station, they encounter the creature, now a massive, tentacled beast with an ominous, gaping mouth. To their horror, the mutant devours Gordon in one swift motion before disappearing down a vent, wreaking havoc in the control room and obliterating all computer systems. Cal realizes that the creature plans to create a perpetual food supply by injecting Proto-B into the bodies of its victims, facilitating their continuous reproduction. Gordon stumbles in, severely disfigured and on the verge of collapse. Cal conveys the grim truth that Gordon’s cells were spliced with Proto-B and used to fertilize an egg implanted into Annie, which led to Subject 20’s rapid growth and ultimately resulted in Annie's demise.

Meanwhile, in the showers, Barbara confides in Tracy that they should strive to communicate with the creature rather than attack it. As Mike and the other men brainstorm methods to eliminate the mutant, the two women venture into the control room. Recognizing that the creature is capable of understanding her, Barbara types on the keyboard to inquire about a potential coexistence with humans, only to be savagely stabbed by the creature's tentacle. Tracy races to inform the men of the tragic event, and Mike along with Brian quickly follow her back to the control room. SAM-104 discloses that it is aware of Cal’s cancerous condition; in a desperate act, Cal injects his cancerous cells into a sample of Gordon's mutating tissue. Subsequently, he detonates the remaining food supply of the creature, preparing to join Brian and Mike in the control room.

In a shocking turn, the creature’s cocoon releases a liquid that electrocutes Brian. As Cal attempts to exterminate the creature, he falls victim to a brutal blow from a tentacle. Accompanied by SAM-104, Mike heeds Cal's orders to transport him to another lab where Cal instructs Mike to excise his liver tumor and offer it to the monster as sustenance. In a race against time, Tracy dashes to retrieve Cal's morphine supply, but fate takes a dire turn when she is pursued by the monster through the halls. Faced with urgency, Mike performs the crude surgery to remove Cal's malignant tumor without waiting for the morphine. As he completes the procedure, Tracy, having managed to evade the beast, returns just in time to administer the morphine to Cal—only for him to succumb immediately afterward.

Suddenly, Subject 20 bursts into the lab, instigating a frantic defense. Mike tries to get the creature to consume the tumor while SAM-104 unleashes its ray gun in a futile effort. In a valiant act, SAM-104 takes a scalpel blade and stabs the monster in its right eye, but the creature retaliates with a fierce blow, shattering the robot into multiple pieces. In a climactic moment, Mike succeeds in offering the tumor to the mutant. In an intense response, the monster violently expels the tumor and collapses, dying a slow and agonizing death. Surrounded by the remnants of their devastated crew and in the midst of carnage, Mike and Tracy reflect on the cost of survival, the gravity of their ordeal lingering in the atmosphere long after the horrific events have unfolded.

Forbidden World Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Forbidden World (1982): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

How was Subject 20 created?

Subject 20 was created through genetic engineering experiments combining Proto-B with rapid-growing algae. However, the crucial revelation is that Gordon Hauser's cells were spliced with Proto-B and used to fertilize an egg that was implanted into a deceased crew member named Annie. This hybrid embryo grew into the octopus-like creature, which explains why the creature has human genetic material and why it targeted the crew.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Barbara cryptically mentions a deceased crew member named Annie when asked what was spliced with Proto-B, hinting at the creature's true origins.

  • subject 20
  • annie
  • gordon
  • proto-b
  • creature origin
  • genetic engineering
Q2

Why did Barbara try to communicate with the creature?

Barbara believed the creature could understand humans and suggested they try to communicate rather than attack it. She typed a message on the keyboard asking if coexistence was possible, reasoning that since the creature demonstrated intelligence, negotiation might work. However, the creature responded violently, stabbing her with a tentacle and killing her.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes show the creature responding to stimuli and demonstrating problem-solving abilities, which Barbara uses as justification for her communication attempt.

  • barbara
  • communication attempt
  • creature intelligence
  • death
Q3

Why did the creature devour Gordon?

The creature has a ravenous appetite and is driven to create a perpetual food supply. It injects Proto-B into its victims' bodies, causing continuous reproduction of consumable tissue. Gordon, being the genetic source of Subject 20, represented the perfect food source for the creature, making him a primary target.

Foreshadowing: Cal explains that the creature plans to create a perpetual food supply by injecting Proto-B into its victims, which foreshadows why it specifically targeted certain crew members.

  • gordon
  • devoured
  • creature hunger
  • proto-b
  • perpetual food supply
Q4

What was Cal's plan with his tumor?

Cal, who was dying from cancer, injected his own cancerous cells into a sample of Gordon's mutating tissue as a desperate attempt to combat the creature. Later, knowing he was already dying, he instructed Mike to excise his liver tumor and offer it to the monster as sustenance. The theory was that the tumor, being malignant and rapidly growing, might satisfy or potentially harm the creature.

Foreshadowing: SAM-104 reveals earlier that it is aware of Cal's cancerous condition, setting up the later sacrifice.

  • cal
  • tumor
  • cancerous cells
  • sacrifice
  • monster feeding
Q5

What happened to Earl on Xarbia?

Earl was killed by Subject 20 while investigating in the dark corridors of the facility. After watching security footage showing Barbara and Mike together, he noticed an alarm alert and descended into a dark corridor where he encountered the creature. His decomposing body was later found by Brian near the mutant's cocoon on the planet's surface.

Foreshadowing: Earl observes the security footage before his fatal encounter, showing his curiosity about the creature's movements led to his doom.

Q6

Why did Jimmy's body transform after death?

Jimmy was attacked by a slimy black blob from Subject 20, which invaded his body. Even after his brain was missing but his heart still beating, his skin and muscles began transforming into a gelatinous substance. This was because the creature's genetic material was actively mutating his body, similar to how it would prepare a victim for consumption and reproduction.

Foreshadowing: Gordon reassuring Jimmy that the increased breathing is expected behavior hints at the creature's transformative effects on its victims.

  • jimmy
  • transformation
  • gelatinous
  • creature attack
Q7

Why did SAM-104 sacrifice itself?

SAM-104 attempted to help Mike defend against Subject 20 by using its ray gun, but this proved ineffective. In a final desperate act, the robot took a scalpel blade and stabbed the monster in its right eye. The creature retaliated with a fierce blow that shattered SAM-104 into multiple pieces, destroying it.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Mike disables SAM-104's controls to allow for free engagement, setting up the robot's active participation in the final battle.

Q8

How did Mike and Tracy survive the creature?

Mike survived by offering Cal's excised tumor to the creature. The monster violently expelled the tumor and collapsed, dying a slow and agonizing death. Tracy survived by evading the creature through the halls and making it back to the others in time to administer morphine to Cal. Their survival was largely due to Mike's quick thinking to use the tumor as bait.

Foreshadowing: Cal instructs Mike to excise his liver tumor and offer it to the monster as sustenance, which becomes the key to defeating Subject 20.

Q9

Why was Subject 20 difficult to kill?

Subject 20 possessed the unique ability to constantly alter its genetic structure, making it incredibly adaptable and resistant to conventional weapons. Its octopus-like form could change shape, it could split into multiple entities, and it constantly evolved. This genetic mutability allowed it to escape laser fire, survive attacks, and continuously reproduce, requiring extreme measures like feeding it biological material to finally kill it.

Foreshadowing: The scientists explain upon Mike's arrival that Subject 20 can constantly alter its genetic structure, establishing its near-invulnerability.

  • subject 20
  • genetic alteration
  • adaptable
  • difficult to kill

Q10

What caused the creature to escape the lab?

The creature escaped after Jimmy's attack when Gordon sent Tracy back to check on the situation. A slimy black blob surged forth from Subject 20 and assaulted Jimmy, then the creature itself broke free during the chaos. Later, the gelatinous mass split into two entities, allowing it to move through the facility and eventually breach the surface through a vent after devouring Gordon.

Foreshadowing: Tracy's discovery of Jimmy's body and the subsequent chaos provided the opportunity for Subject 20 to breach containment.

  • creature escape
  • lab breach
  • split
  • vent

Q11

Why did the creature attack the crew?

The creature attacked out of pure instinct and hunger. Being a genetically engineered organism designed to be a food source, Subject 20 was driven to consume flesh and inject Proto-B into victims to create continuous reproduction of consumable tissue. The crew represented available prey on a remote planet with no other food sources.

Foreshadowing: The scientists mention the successful creation of a new food source through their experiments, which directly relates to the creature's purpose and hunger.

  • creature attack
  • hunger
