John Garrity, a structural engineer, returns home from work, hopeful to reconcile with his estranged wife Allison and their son, Nathan. They are preparing to watch the passage of interstellar comet Clarke, an event that soon spirals into chaos.

While at a grocery store, John and Nathan experience a moment of panic as military cargo jets fly overhead. Shortly after, John receives an alarming automated phone call informing them that their family has been pre-selected for emergency sheltering.

As John rushes home, the comet fragment enters the atmosphere, leading to a catastrophic shockwave that annihilates Tampa, Florida. This horrifying news escalates the urgency for evacuation, and chaos ensues among their neighbors.

A neighbor warns John that Clarke is not merely a comet but poses a massive threat with large objects expected to hit Earth. In the midst of this panic, John and his family hastily prepare to flee their home, feeling the impending doom.

Upon arriving at Robins Air Force Base, John’s family faces a debilitating traffic jam, forcing them to continue on foot. During this ordeal, Nathan accidentally leaves his vital insulin behind, significantly increasing their peril.

As they attempt to board a plane for evacuation, a soldier discovers Nathan's medical condition, causing their refusal to leave. John manages to get on a plane but is unaware that Allison and Nathan have been left behind amidst the chaos.

Returning to his car in desperation, John finds a note left by Allison indicating they have headed to her father's home in Lexington, Kentucky. This clue ignites John's determination to reunite with his family.

Allison and Nathan find themselves with Ralph and Judy Vento, who are also heading towards Kentucky. However, Ralph's dark intentions lead to him ejecting Allison and kidnapping Nathan, exacerbating their suffering.

After regrouping with survivors, John discovers plans for military flights to Greenland. However, tensions escalate as he must defend himself in a dangerous confrontation, resulting in the loss of life, complicating his escape.

In a newfound twist of fate, Allison and Nathan end up in a FEMA camp. Nathan's honesty about his kidnapping helps them reuniting, providing a glimmer of hope in the desperate circumstances they face.

The next day, John scavenges through an abandoned neighborhood for supplies. As he gathers essentials, he catches news reports of devastation worldwide, and his resolve to find his missing family strengthens.

Determined to locate his family, John makes his way to his father-in-law's house. The realization that his family is still missing fuels his quest to reunite with them, enduring numerous obstacles along the way.

Having finally reunited, the Garrity family makes plans to escape to Canada for safety. Their hopes are soon shattered as an alert warns of incoming molten debris, and they must seek refuge from yet another disaster.

Just as they secure their seats on a hastily organized evacuation flight to Greenland, disaster strikes as a comet fragment causes the plane to crash land. They must navigate the wreckage to survive the aftermath.

After emerging from the rubble of the crash, the family braces for the reality of Clarke's presence in the sky. Months later, they step outside the Greenland base to a radically changed world, greeted by the sight of soaring birds, symbolizing a fragile hope.
