Remember the Night

As Lee Leander awaits her trial in a jail cell, accused of stealing a beautiful bracelet from a jewelry store in New York City, she finds herself at the mercy of John “Jack” Sargent, the Assistant District Attorney assigned to prosecute her case. The timing of the trial, right before Christmas, feels particularly harsh, adding a layer of irony as the festive season approaches. In a clever move, Jack exploits a technicality to delay the trial, much to Lee’s frustration.

Haunted by guilt over Lee’s extended stay behind bars, Jack decides to ask bondsman Fat Mike to post her bail. However, Fat Mike misunderstands Jack’s intentions, believing that he is interested in more than just helping Lee, and instead delivers her to Jack’s apartment. Their shared roots from Indiana bring them closer, and Jack generously offers Lee the chance to visit her mother for Christmas. Unfortunately, their trip takes an unexpected twist, leaving them lost in a Pennsylvania field where they must spend the night.

Upon waking, they are confronted by an angry landowner who arrests them for trespassing and damages, leading them to a hostile justice of the peace. Using her quick wit, Lee manages to create a diversion by starting a fire, providing them with an opportunity to escape. Eventually, they reach Lee’s mother’s house, only to be met with disdain and negativity, forcing Lee to reckon with the lack of a supportive family.

Jack’s conscience gnaws at him, prompting the decision to bring Lee to his family for Christmas. Initially hesitant, they are welcomed with open arms by his relatives, including his cousin Willie, aunt Emma, and mother. The festive atmosphere culminates in a romantic New Year’s Eve kiss between Jack and Lee at a barn dance, but their blossoming relationship faces challenges when Jack’s mother unexpectedly visits Lee’s room.

During this encounter, his mother opens up about the family’s history and the sacrifices they made for a better life, stressing the importance of education and the looming consequences of Lee’s past on Jack’s future. With a heavy heart, Lee agrees to step back, prioritizing Jack’s career over her desires, as midnight strikes.

Taking the long way back to New York through the breathtaking scenery of Niagara Falls, Jack has the chance to confess his undeniable love for Lee. Despite his heartfelt pleadings for her to abandon the bail system and embrace a fresh start with him, Lee firmly rejects the idea. Returning to the busy city, Jack takes a bold approach in court, employing intense interrogation methods to garner sympathy from the jury in a desperate attempt to clear Lee of the charges. Yet, his boss, aware of the scandalous affair, watches from the sidelines, fully understanding the potential ramifications on Jack’s career.

As the trial reaches its peak, Lee, cognizant of the tightrope they balance upon due to public scrutiny, makes a drastic choice: she changes her plea to guilty. Chaos erupts in the courtroom as she is led away in handcuffs, leaving Jack in a state of devastation. In a heart-wrenching moment, he asks Lee to reconsider their future together, even suggesting marriage right away. Her response, while warm, is resolute; she insists that if Jack’s feelings remain true after her time in prison and thoughtful reflection, then they may discuss the idea of marriage. With a heavy heart, Jack pledges to support Lee through her sentencing, extending his hand in a gesture of solidarity as she departs.
