The film opens in a bustling Chicago airport, where a group of Marines has just returned home from Iraq. Among them is Jesse Rodriguez (Freddy Rodríguez), who lingers behind as his comrades head out. The scene shifts to a cozy family home where Edy Rodriguez (played by Alfred Molina) climbs a ladder, busy hanging a heartfelt welcome home sign for his son. His wife, Anna Rodriguez (portrayed by Elizabeth Peña), expresses her concern with a weary look before heading off to complete preparations for Jesse’s arrival.
Edy heads to his neighborhood supermarket, a local hub where his charm wins over many of the regulars, particularly the women. At the airport, Jesse reunites with his friends, Johnny (Luis Gusman) and Ozzy (Jay Hernandez), who eagerly come to greet him. During their drive to Edy’s store, Jesse reveals to his friends that he can see despite losing an eye, but the injury serves as a constant reminder of the friends he lost, specifically Timmy, who didn’t make it back. Struggling with survivor’s guilt, Jesse stops at their childhood park where they play a nostalgic game of softball.
Upon arrival at Edy’s store, Jesse receives an enthusiastic greeting from the neighborhood, honored as a local war hero. Excited, he heads home to join the family for Christmas celebrations. His sister Roxanna (Vanessa Ferlito), who has returned with an air of accomplishment, and brother Mauricio (John Leguizamo) with his wife Sarah (Debra Messing) quickly join the festivities. The atmosphere is lively but tension brews between Sarah and Anna over the topic of grandchildren, with Anna making her desires clear.
As they gather around the table for Christmas dinner, stories begin to unfold; Jesse cautiously shares bits about his time in Iraq, but it’s evident he is keeping significant pain close to his heart. The gathering takes a serious turn when Edy’s phone repeatedly interrupts his attempts to toast the family. Growing suspicious about Edy’s behavior, Anna mistakenly believes he might be unfaithful and declares her intent to divorce him, shocking everyone present.
As the family navigates through emotional turmoil, Jesse struggles to come to terms with his own experiences and decides to step in to bridge the gap between Edy and Anna. After a heartfelt exchange where Jesse reveals the burden of guilt he carries, family tensions lead them to the bar to unwind. Sarah and Edy connect and reveal deeper issues during their drive to the bar when Edy almost loses control of the car, hinting at his serious health problems.
Over the course of their Christmas celebrations, misunderstandings culminate as Edy faces the harsh reality of his cancer diagnosis. The family rallies together at the hospital to support Edy, while personal relationships among the siblings evolve. As the holiday festivities wind down, Jesse visits Marissa, his ex-girlfriend, to apologize for the events that transpired, only to discover she is now committed to someone else.
In a poignant moment of closure, Jesse takes steps to truly move on from his past, beginning to embrace his new role in the family business. The film ultimately explores themes of family, forgiveness, and the harsh realities of life, leaving a lasting impact as it encapsulates the importance of togetherness, especially during trying times.
